Somebody went looking for the eight glasses rule and could not find it
Everyone knows you should drink eight glasses of water a day. It is one of the most widely repeated pieces of health advice in the English-speaking world, taught in schools, printed on bottles, quoted by people who agree on nothing else.
In 2002 a physiologist named Heinz Valtin decided to track down where it came from. He was not trying to debunk it. He assumed, reasonably, that a rule that universal must rest on something, and he went looking for the study.
He could not find one.
His paper, published in the American Journal of Physiology, asked the question in its title: is there any scientific evidence for eight by eight? His conclusion, after going through the literature, was that there is no such evidence, and that the rule appears to have grown out of a misreading and then simply repeated itself into authority. It sounds official because everyone says it. Everyone says it because it sounds official.
That does not make drinking water bad, obviously. It makes the number arbitrary. And it is worth knowing, because a startling amount of low-grade daily guilt in otherwise sensible people is generated by falling short of a target that nobody ever established.
The number includes your dinner
So where does the figure this tool gave you come from? Somewhere considerably better.
In 2004 the Institute of Medicine published Adequate Intakes for water, and those are the figures behind this calculator:

Now the crucial word, which gets dropped almost every time these numbers are quoted, including by people who ought to know better.
Total.
That is not water you must drink. It is all the water entering your body from everything, and roughly 20 to 30 percent of it arrives in your food. Not just soup and fruit, either. A cucumber is around 96 percent water. Yoghurt is about 85 percent. An apple is 86. Even a chicken breast is nearly two thirds water by weight. You eat a substantial fraction of your daily water without ever lifting a glass, and everything else you drink counts too: tea, coffee, milk, juice. All of it is mostly water and all of it hydrates you.
So the drinking target is meaningfully lower than the total. The IOM's own breakdown puts beverages at around 3.0 litres for men and 2.2 litres for women, with food covering the rest. If you read 3.7 litres as "water to drink", you have set yourself a target roughly a fifth higher than the evidence asks for, and then failed at it.
Coffee deserves its own sentence, because the myth is so persistent. Caffeine is a mild diuretic, so people conclude coffee dehydrates you. It does not, in any practical sense. The water in the cup vastly outweighs the small diuretic effect, and your morning coffee lands firmly on the positive side of the ledger. It counts.
You are probably already hitting it
Here is the fact that ought to end most people's water anxiety, and it comes from the CDC's own survey data rather than from anybody's opinion.
American adults, measured across 2009 to 2012, consumed on average 3.46 litres of total water a day for men and 2.75 litres for women.
Compare those against the targets. The Adequate Intake for women is 2.7 litres. The average woman was drinking 2.75. She is over the line, on average, with no water bottle, no app, no reminders and no effort. Men come in a little under 3.7, and largely because the male figure is set higher.
Consider what that implies. If ordinary people going about ordinary lives are landing at or near the recommendation without trying, then the mechanism responsible for getting them there is not discipline. It is thirst. It was doing its job the entire time you were not thinking about it.
Which is roughly what you would expect from a system your body has been running for a very long time. Water balance is not a peripheral concern for a mammal. It is regulated tightly, continuously, by machinery involving your kidneys, your brain and a set of hormones that respond to changes in your blood concentration far too small for you to perceive. The output of all that engineering is the sensation of thirst, and it arrives well before anything is wrong.
The authority that set the number also told you to ignore it
This is the part that seems too good to be true and is not.
When the Institute of Medicine issued these figures, it did not present them as targets to hit. It explicitly disclaimed the eight-glasses rule, and concluded that healthy adults can use thirst to determine their water needs.
Read that again in context. The body that produced the numbers on this page said, in the same breath, that a healthy person does not need to count. The Adequate Intakes are not prescriptions. They were derived by observing what healthy, free-living people in temperate climates actually drank, and reporting the median. They describe what people do, and people are fine.
So what is this calculator for? Two honest uses. It gives you a sanity check, a rough sense of scale so that you know whether you are wildly off rather than fractionally off. And it handles the situations where the number genuinely changes, which is why it asks about pregnancy and breastfeeding, where the requirement really does rise, and by a lot: an extra 1.1 litres a day while lactating, because you are manufacturing a liquid that is roughly 88 percent water.
What it is not for is turning a solved problem into a chore. If you are a healthy adult and you drink when you are thirsty, you have already done this correctly, and the number above is a description of you rather than an instruction to you.
Who genuinely should not rely on thirst
The advice above holds for healthy adults in ordinary conditions. There are real exceptions, and they matter.
- Older adults. This is the important one. Thirst sensation genuinely declines with age, which means the signal that works so well at thirty is less reliable at eighty. Someone older can be short of water without feeling it, so scheduled drinking rather than thirst-led drinking is the sensible approach past about 65.
- Infants and young children. Small bodies, poor at communicating, and a much smaller reserve. This is why the tool has separate child bands, and why babies under six months should be getting milk rather than water at all.
- Anyone ill. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea all raise losses sharply while often suppressing the desire to drink. Illness is when deliberate fluids matter most and feel least appealing.
- Heavy sweating. Serious exercise, heat, or physical work outdoors. Thirst lags behind sweat losses during hard exertion, so athletes drink to a plan rather than to a feeling.
- Kidney stones, where a higher deliberate intake is one of the few genuinely effective preventive measures, and worth discussing with a doctor.
Notice the pattern. Every exception is a case where the signal is broken or outpaced. In everyone else, the signal works.
And yes, you can drink too much
Since the cultural pressure runs entirely in one direction, this is worth saying plainly.
Drinking far more water than you need is not virtuous and is not free. Take in enough plain water fast enough and you dilute the sodium in your blood, a condition called hyponatremia. In mild form it means headache, nausea and confusion. In serious form it is dangerous, and people have died of it, mostly endurance athletes who drank on a schedule rather than to thirst, and occasionally people doing it deliberately for a challenge or a bet.
You are extremely unlikely to manage this by accident, and we are not trying to alarm you. The point is narrower: more is not better. There is no bonus tier. Past the point where your needs are met, additional water is simply water passing through you, and your kidneys are doing extra work to no purpose.
If you want a check that beats any calculator, use the one clinicians actually use: look in the toilet. Pale straw is fine. Consistently dark suggests drinking more. Persistently colourless suggests you are drinking more than you need. It is free, it is immediate, it responds to your actual life rather than an average, and it is a better guide than the number this page just gave you.
Questions people ask
Is eight glasses a day wrong?
It is not so much wrong as unfounded. When a physiologist went looking for the evidence behind it in 2002, he could not find any. It is roughly the right order of magnitude for many people, which is why it has survived.
Does coffee count?
Yes. Caffeine is a mild diuretic but the water in the cup easily outweighs it. Tea, milk and juice all count too, as does the water in your food, which is 20 to 30 percent of the total.
Can I just drink when thirsty?
If you are a healthy adult, yes, and that is the Institute of Medicine's own position. The exceptions are older adults, young children, anyone ill, and anyone sweating heavily.
Does drinking water help you lose weight?

Is the number I got the amount to drink?
No, it is total water including food. Subtract roughly a fifth to a quarter to get the drinking figure, which lands near 3.0 litres for men and 2.2 for women.
