Fifty-two pounds a year
Let us do the sum that this converter invites, and then let us be honest about it.
You want to lose 20 pounds. Type it in, and the tool multiplies by 3,500 and tells you the answer: 70,000 calories. Fine. Now suppose you run a 500 calorie deficit every day. Seventy thousand divided by 500 is 140 days, so a shade under five months. Simple.
Push it further, because the arithmetic invites that too. Five hundred calories a day for a year is 182,500 calories. Divide by 3,500 and you get 52 pounds. So the rule quietly promises that anyone who skips a daily muffin will be nearly four stone lighter by this time next year, every year, presumably until they disappear.
Nobody has ever done this. Not one person. The rule has been printed in textbooks and clinical guidelines for sixty years and its central promise has never once come true at the scale it predicts. That is worth understanding before you plan anything around the number this tool just gave you.
Why you cannot bank calories
The mistake hiding inside the arithmetic is that it treats calories like money in an account. Put 500 in the deficit column each day, watch the balance accumulate, withdraw a pound whenever you have 3,500 saved up. Money behaves that way. Bodies do not.
The problem is that the thing doing the burning is the same thing you are trying to shrink. Take a pound off and there is now slightly less of you: less tissue to keep warm, less mass to haul up the stairs, a marginally smaller engine. So your daily burn drops a little. Your 500 calorie deficit was measured against the person you used to be, and against the person you now are it is only a 480 calorie deficit. Then a 460. The gap closes underneath you while you are still doing everything right.
Your body helps this along. It slows its resting rate by more than the lost weight alone can account for, an effect that shows up reliably in people who have dieted down and one that can persist for years. And you move less without deciding to, in small unnoticed ways.
So the deficit erodes, and eventually it reaches zero. Not because you failed, but because arithmetic that assumes a fixed machine was applied to something that adapts. Every diet has a weight where a given intake stops being a deficit and becomes maintenance. The rule does not know that, and never did.
How far off does it actually land?
Somebody has measured this, which saves us from guessing. Over roughly six months, the 3,500 rule overestimates real weight loss by something in the region of 20 to 50 percent for most people.
Sit that next to the example. The rule said your 20 pounds would take five months. Reality says it will take rather longer, and the further out you project, the wider the gap gets. Over a full year the promised 52 pounds is not off by a few pounds, it is off by half a person.
Which gives you the honest way to read anything this tool outputs. The calorie figure is a fair statement of the energy in that much fat tissue. Any timeline you build from it is a best case, achievable in the short term and drifting steadily further from the truth the longer you run it. Recalculate as you go, at your new weight, rather than trusting a plan you made at the start.
A confession about our own two converters
One small piece of honesty while we are on the subject of misplaced precision.
This tool uses 3,500 calories per pound. Our Kg to Calorie converter uses 7,700 calories per kilogram. They ought to be the same rule in two costumes, so let us check. There are 2.2046 pounds in a kilogram, and 3,500 multiplied by 2.2046 comes to 7,716. Not 7,700.
So our own two converters disagree with each other by 16 calories per kilogram. Convert one kilogram here and there and you will get answers that differ by about 0.2 percent.
We could quietly fix the rounding and say nothing. But the mismatch is a rather good illustration of the point this whole page is making, so it is more useful left in view. Both numbers are roundings of a figure that was itself a rounding of a calculation based on a single sample of human fat from 1911. Arguing about the sixteenth calorie is like measuring a coastline with a ruler. The honest precision of this number is roughly "about three and a half thousand", and every decimal beyond that is decoration.

Questions people ask
Can I really lose 52 pounds a year on a 500 calorie deficit?
No. That is what the arithmetic predicts and it does not happen, because your daily burn falls as you get lighter and your body slows its resting rate. Expect meaningfully less, and expect the gap to widen the longer you go.
So is the number useless?
Not at all. As a statement of how much energy is stored in a pound of fat it is a decent approximation, and over a few weeks it predicts reasonably well. It falls apart when you extend it into months and years, which is unfortunately how most people use it.
What should I use instead for planning?
A calorie target recalculated at your current weight every few pounds, and a willingness to judge by what the scale actually does over a few weeks rather than what a formula promised at the start.
Which is right, 3,500 or 7,700?
Both, near enough, and neither exactly. They are the same rough rule in different units, and the 16 calorie gap between them is far smaller than the rule's own margin of error.
