Your stomach counts grams, not calories
Here is the observation this entire tool rests on, and it is one of the more useful things anyone has ever noticed about eating.
People eat a fairly consistent weight of food from day to day. Not a consistent number of calories. A consistent amount of physical stuff.
Which makes sense when you think about the machinery involved. Your stomach has stretch receptors. They report how full it is. They have no way of knowing what the contents are worth energetically, because there is no calorimeter in there, and evolution never needed one. Your fullness signal is substantially a volume and weight signal.
Now follow that through, because the consequence is enormous. If you eat roughly the same weight of food regardless, then the number of calories you consume is decided almost entirely by how many calories were packed into each gram. That is calorie density, and it is what this tool measures.
It reframes the whole problem. The usual approach to eating less is to eat less, which requires you to override the fullness signal and lose. The alternative is to leave the weight of your food alone and lower the density, which means eating the same volume, feeling equally full, and taking in considerably fewer calories. You are not fighting the signal. You are feeding it cheaper material.
The whole scale runs from 0 to 9
The arithmetic is as simple as it gets: calories divided by grams. What matters is knowing what the answer means, and the scale has hard walls at both ends.
The bottom is 0, which is water. The top is 9, which is pure fat, because fat carries 9 calories a gram and nothing carries more. Every food you will ever eat lives between those two numbers.

Now the demonstration that makes the point better than any explanation. Take 1,000 calories and buy it from opposite ends of the scale:
From broccoli, at about 0.34 kcal/g: roughly 2.9 kilograms.
From nuts, at about 6 kcal/g: roughly 167 grams.
Same calories. One is a wheelbarrow you could not finish if you tried. The other is a small handful you could eat standing at a cupboard without noticing. That is a difference of about eighteen times by weight, and your stretch receptors will report on the weight.
This is also, incidentally, the honest explanation for why nuts are simultaneously excellent food and very easy to overeat. Nothing is wrong with them. They are just extraordinarily dense, and your fullness signal is not built to notice.
Water is the lever, and it is free
So what actually determines a food's density? Three things push it up, and one thing pulls it down, and the one is more powerful than the three.
Pushing up: fat, at 9 calories a gram, is by far the biggest. Then sugar and starch at 4, and protein at 4.
Pulling down: water, at zero. And it is not close. Water is the single largest determinant of a food's calorie density, more than fat, because water is the only ingredient that adds weight while adding nothing at all. Fibre helps too, adding bulk for almost no usable energy, which is why our Net Carb Calculator subtracts it.
Once you see it, the table above stops being a list to memorise and becomes obvious. A cucumber is around 96 percent water, so it is nearly free. Watermelon is in the same territory, which is why you can eat an alarming quantity of it. Oil has no water at all, so it sits at the ceiling. Cheese is dense not because cheese is bad but because making cheese is, essentially, removing water from milk.
This is also why cooking method changes the answer so much more than people expect. A potato is about 0.9 kcal/g. Slice the same potato thin and fry it, driving off the water and replacing it with oil, and you have somewhere over 5. Same vegetable. You removed the free ingredient and added the most expensive one. The chip is not a potato that went wrong morally; it is a potato with its water swapped for fat.
Why the tool asks whether it is a drink
The food type selector is doing something more meaningful than it appears, and it is worth knowing why.
The scale above does not transfer honestly to liquids. Calories you drink appear not to register with your appetite the way the same calories eaten do. You do not compensate for them later. A person who has a 250 calorie drink with lunch does not eat 250 calories less across the rest of the day; they mostly just eat 250 calories more in total.
Why is contested. Liquids leave the stomach fast, so the stretch signal is brief. There is nothing to chew, and chewing appears to be part of how the brain registers that eating happened. Whatever the mechanism, the practical result is consistent: drinks are the easiest calories to consume without noticing you consumed them.
Which turns the scale upside down for them. A fizzy drink at about 0.4 kcal/g looks angelic on the table above, sitting alongside vegetables. It is not the same thing at all. Broccoli at 0.34 fills you up and makes you eat less afterwards. A drink at 0.4 does neither, so it is close to a pure addition to your day.
So read a low density on a drink with real suspicion. Then note the flip side, which is genuinely useful: soup. Soup is the one place where adding water to a meal actually works as a strategy, because it is eaten with a spoon, slowly, and it behaves like food rather than like a drink. A soup at 0.5 kcal/g is doing the same job broccoli does, and it is why soup starters have a decent evidence base behind them.
Using the number without becoming tiresome
Some honest limits, because this is a lens and not a law.
Density is not virtue. Olive oil sits at 9, the theoretical maximum, and it is one of the better things you can eat. Nuts are near the top and are excellent food. Meanwhile a diet cola is near the bottom and contributes nothing whatsoever. Low density means filling per calorie. It does not mean good, and a tool that measures one thing cannot tell you the other.
Some calories should be dense. If you are trying to gain weight, everything on this page runs in reverse, and density is your ally rather than your enemy. It says nothing about protein. Density and protein are independent, and protein is the thing you should protect while cutting. Our Protein Intake Calculator handles that. The two together are the actual strategy: adequate protein, and the rest of the plate lowered in density.
The practical version of all this is smaller than it sounds and requires no tracking at all. Put something with a lot of water in it at the front of the meal, or on half the plate. Be aware of, rather than afraid of, the things above about 4. Notice that the drink is not free. That is the entire method, and none of it requires you to know that a cucumber is 0.16.
Questions people ask
What is a good calorie density?
Under about 1.5 kcal/g for most of what fills your plate is a reasonable aim if you are trying to eat less without being hungry. Above 4 is where small amounts carry a lot, which is worth knowing rather than avoiding.
Why can nothing be above 9?
Because fat is the most energy-dense thing you can eat at 9 calories a gram, so a food that was 100 percent fat would sit at exactly 9. Everything else contains something less dense, including water.
Is olive oil bad because it is a 9?
No. Density measures how filling something is per calorie, not whether it is good for you. Oil is dense and also genuinely worth eating. Our Fat Intake Calculator covers why fat is not optional.
Do drinks really not count the same?
Correct, and it is one of the better-supported findings in appetite research. Drunk calories tend not to be compensated for later, so they mostly add to your day rather than displacing something else.
Do I have to calculate this for everything?
Please do not. Run a few things you eat often, get a feel for the scale, and then forget the numbers. The habit is what works, not the tracking.
