Your tracker counted steps, not distance

Whatever is on your wrist or in your pocket counted one thing today: the number of times something jolted in a pattern that looked like a footfall. That is all a step count is. It is a count of events, not a measurement of ground covered.

To turn that count into a distance, something has to know how far you travel per step. Your phone does not know that. It either guesses from a population average, or it uses GPS when it can, or it quietly learns from your walks. Which is why your phone and your watch can disagree about the same walk, and why neither necessarily agrees with the map.

This tool does the conversion explicitly, using the one thing that predicts your step length better than anything else: your height. Below is where that comes from, why the popular "2,000 steps per mile" rule is wrong for nearly everyone who uses it, and the honest reasons your real distance will wander from any number here.

Where your step length comes from

Long legs cover more ground per step. That is the entire insight, and it turns out to be regular enough to build a formula on. Step length runs at roughly 41 percent of your height:

Step length (inches) = height (inches) × 0.415 for men
Step length (inches) = height (inches) × 0.413 for women

Then the rest is unit conversion. There are 12 inches in a foot and 5,280 feet in a mile, so 63,360 inches in a mile. Divide that by your step length and you get your personal steps-per-mile:

Look at the spread. A 5'2" person needs about 20 percent more steps than a 6'2" person to walk the same mile. Same effort in the sense that matters, wildly different number on the screen.

A worked example

A 5'10" man, 10,000 steps on the tracker.

Height in inches = 70
Step length = 70 × 0.415 = 29.05 inches
Distance = 29.05 × 10,000 = 290,500 inches
In feet = 290,500 ÷ 12 = 24,208 ft
In miles = 24,208 ÷ 5,280 = about 4.6 miles

So the famous 10,000 steps is roughly four and a half miles for him. For the 5'2" walker in the table above, the same 10,000 steps is about 4.0 miles. Same count, half a mile apart.

Step or stride? They are not the same thing

These two words get used interchangeably everywhere, including by people who should know better, and the difference is a factor of two.

  • A step is one foot placement. Left foot lands. That is one step.
  • A stride is a full gait cycle: left foot lands, right foot lands, left foot lands again. That is two steps.

Stride length = 2 × step length. So our 5'10" man has a step length of about 29 inches and a stride length of about 58 inches.

Why it matters practically: your tracker counts steps, not strides. So if a device or an app asks you to enter your "stride length" and you type in your step length, or the reverse, your distances will be out by a factor of two, which is the kind of error that makes people think their tracker is broken. When something asks, check which one it means, and if the field wants a number around 28 to 30 inches it wants your step length whatever it calls it.

The height formula above gives step length, which is the right thing to multiply a step count by.

Why "2,000 steps per mile" is wrong for almost everyone

You will see this figure everywhere, printed on treadmills and baked into apps. It is a real average of a mixed population, and it is a poor description of any actual person.

Work backwards from it. For 2,000 steps to make a mile, each step has to cover 63,360 ÷ 2,000 = 31.7 inches. Run that through the height formula and you get a person about 76 inches tall. The "2,000 steps per mile" rule is accurate for a 6'4" man, and gently wrong for everybody shorter, which is most people.

The size of the error is not trivial either. Someone 5'2" actually takes around 2,474 steps per mile. Using the 2,000 rule tells them they walked 5.0 miles when they walked about 4.0. That is a 20 percent overstatement, repeated every day, which quietly inflates every distance and calorie estimate downstream of it.

Realistically, walking runs from about 1,900 to 2,600 steps per mile depending on height. A single number cannot cover that, which is why this tool asks for yours.

Your step length is not a constant

The formula treats your step length as a fixed property of your body, like your shoe size. It is not. It is a behaviour, and it changes constantly:

  • Speed. The big one. When you walk faster your steps automatically lengthen, and when you dawdle they shorten. A leisurely amble can have steps around 20 percent shorter than a brisk walk. Your body does this without asking you.
  • Terrain. Uphill shortens your step noticeably. Downhill lengthens it slightly. Sand, snow and uneven ground all shorten it.
  • Fatigue. Your steps at mile one and mile five of the same walk are not the same length.
  • Age. Adults over about 65 tend to have shorter steps for their height, commonly 5 to 15 percent shorter.
  • Shoes. Heels change gait mechanics. So do heavy boots.
  • What you are doing. Pushing a pram, carrying shopping, walking a dog that stops at every lamp post. All of it shortens your step, and none of it is visible to a formula.

And the awkward one nobody mentions: your tracker counts a lot of things that were not walking. Fidgeting, gesturing while you talk, doing the washing-up, a bumpy car ride. Those steps go into your count and cover no ground at all. Converting them to distance is converting phantom miles.

Running breaks this formula

Worth stating plainly, because this is the largest single error you can make with this tool.

The 0.415 and 0.413 factors are walking factors. When you run, your step length increases dramatically, commonly by 40 to 60 percent, and the appropriate factor climbs to somewhere around 0.55 to 0.60 of your height. Feed a run's step count into a walking formula and you will substantially underestimate the distance covered.

Concretely: 5,000 running steps for our 5'10" man at a walking factor comes out around 2.3 miles. At a realistic running factor it is closer to 3 miles. That is a big miss, and it goes the wrong way, telling you that you did less than you did.

So if your step count is mostly running, this tool is the wrong instrument and GPS is the right one. If your day is a mix, the number here leans conservative.

About the gender dropdown

Honest note on this one, since you have to answer it: it barely matters.

The two factors are 0.415 and 0.413. On a 70-inch person that is a difference of 0.14 inches per step, which works out at about 0.5 percent in your final answer, or roughly 10 steps per mile. Meanwhile the range the tool prints around its own estimate spans about 10 percent, and the real-world variation from walking pace alone is bigger than both put together.

The reason the difference is so small is that the two factors are both really proxies for leg length relative to height, and that ratio does not differ much between men and women at the same height. A 5'10" man and a 5'10" woman take almost exactly the same number of steps per mile. Height is doing all the work here; sex is a rounding error.

So answer it however you like and put your care into getting the height right. That is the input that actually moves the number.

Why the answer comes as a range

The tool does not give you a single distance. It gives you a band, and given everything above, that is the right instinct: a point estimate would imply a precision that a height-based formula simply does not have.

Treat the range as the tool's way of saying "somewhere around here". Under good conditions, flat ground and a steady walking pace, a height-based estimate is usually within a few percent of the truth. Under real conditions, with hills and stops and a dog, the honest uncertainty is wider than any band on screen.

Which is the correct way to use this: as a decent estimate of a walk you have already done, useful for tracking your own trend over weeks. It is not a measurement, and it should not be compared against someone else's tracker to see who won.

How to get your real number in ten minutes

If you want to stop estimating, measure. It is genuinely easy and it beats every formula on this page.

  1. Find a known distance. A running track's inside lane is 400 metres, which is about 0.25 miles. A marked stretch of park path works. So does a football pitch.
  2. Walk it at your normal pace, counting every step. Not a demonstration pace. Your actual pace.
  3. Divide the distance in inches by your step count. For a 400 m lap, that is 15,748 inches divided by your steps.
  4. Do it twice and average, because you will miscount once.

Now you have your real step length, and 63,360 divided by it is your real steps-per-mile. Put that into your tracker's settings and every distance it reports gets better immediately. Ten minutes of counting beats any formula, including this one.

Questions people ask

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

Between about 4 and 5 miles for most adults, and where you land depends mostly on your height. A 5'2" walker covers roughly 4.0 miles; a 6'2" walker covers roughly 4.9. The commonly quoted "5 miles" is only right for quite tall people. Your own height in the tool above will get you closer than any average.

Why does my phone say a different distance from this?

Because it is probably not using your height. Phones and watches use a mix of GPS, a default stride estimate, and sometimes a learned value from your past walks. When GPS is available, the device is measuring rather than estimating, and you should believe the device. Indoors or on a treadmill, it is guessing too, and its guess may be based on a population average rather than on you.

Does this work for treadmill steps?

Reasonably, and it is arguably where a height-based formula is most useful, since there is no GPS to help. But treadmill walking tends to produce slightly different step lengths from walking on ground, and the treadmill's own distance readout is measuring belt movement, which is a real measurement. If the two disagree, trust the belt.

Is 2,000 steps a mile a fair rule of thumb?

Only if you are about 6'4". That figure implies a step length of 31.7 inches, which is a tall person's step. For someone 5'2" the real figure is nearer 2,474 steps, so the 2,000 rule overstates their distance by about 20 percent. It is a fine rule for rough mental arithmetic and a poor one for anything you are tracking.

Can I use this for a run?

Not accurately, and it will undersell you. Running steps are 40 to 60 percent longer than walking steps, so this walking formula will report a shorter distance than you actually covered. For runs, use GPS. If your day is mixed walking and running, treat the number here as a floor.
