Why walking is worth measuring
Walking barely feels like exercise, which is exactly why people underrate it, then quietly wonder whether it is doing anything at all. It is. A steady daily walk is one of the most reliable ways to burn calories over time, precisely because it is gentle enough to keep doing when harder workouts fall by the wayside.
So you gave the tool your pace, your weight and how long you walked, and it handed back a calorie range. That range is not the tool hedging its bets. It is honest, because "a brisk walk" is a band of speeds rather than one exact pace, and where you land inside it depends on how hard you actually pushed.
The formula this calculator uses
Behind the number sits the MET, a simple multiple of the energy you burn at rest. Sitting still is 1 MET; an easy stroll is a little over 2; a brisk, purposeful walk is up around 5. The tool takes the MET for your chosen pace, your weight and your time, and runs the standard equation:
Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) × time (minutes) ÷ 200
Each option in the dropdown maps to a band of MET values, taken from the Compendium of Physical Activities. The faster or steeper the effort, the higher the band:

A worked example
Say you weigh 70 kilograms and walk at a brisk pace, a MET range of 5.3 to 8.3, for 30 minutes. The tool works both ends of the band:
Low end: 5.3 × 3.5 × 70 × 30 ÷ 200 ≈ 195 kcal
High end: 8.3 × 3.5 × 70 × 30 ÷ 200 ≈ 305 kcal
So it reports roughly 195 to 305 calories, and where you sit inside that comes down to your real speed and the ground under your feet.
Hills and stairs change everything
If one thing about walking deserves its own heading, it is this. Look back at the table and you will see hiking, climbing hills and stair climbing all sitting well above flat walking. That is not the numbers being inflated. Lifting your own body weight upward is real work against gravity, and it costs energy on top of simply moving forward.
The practical effect is large. The same half hour, at what you would honestly call a moderate effort, can burn far more on a hill or a staircase than on the flat. So if your walk involved real climbing but you picked a flat-walking pace, your true burn sits above what the tool shows. When the route goes up, choose the option that reflects it, and you will get a fairer number.
If you count steps, not minutes
This tool asks for minutes, which trips up anyone who tracks walking by steps on a phone or a watch. The two connect easily enough. At a moderate walk most people take somewhere around 100 steps a minute, so a 30 minute walk is very roughly 3,000 steps. And as a rough rule, about 2,000 steps covers a mile.

Where the estimate is rough
A walking figure is a solid ballpark, not a measurement, and a couple of honest limits apply:
- What you are carrying is invisible to it. A loaded backpack or a pushed pram adds weight to move, so a heavy load puts your real burn above the number.
- The baseline runs a little generous. Like every MET tool, this leans on a standard resting value that overstates the burn for many people, so read the figure as a fair estimate rather than an exact count.

Questions people ask
Is walking actually worth it for burning calories?
More than its gentle reputation suggests. It burns fewer calories per minute than running, but it is easy to sustain for long stretches, kind to the joints, and simple to repeat every day, which is what adds up over weeks.
Why does my step counter give a different number?
A step counter estimates from movement and your profile; this tool estimates from a fixed pace band. Both are approximations, and a gap of ten or twenty percent between them is normal.
Does walking uphill really burn that much more?
It really does. Raising your body against gravity is hard work, which is why the incline options carry noticeably higher MET values than flat walking.
How fast should I walk to burn more?
A faster walk burns more per minute, but the bigger lever is usually terrain rather than speed. Adding hills helps most; past a certain pace it becomes easier to jog, which is why genuinely fast walking is rare.
