Turning a distance into a target
This is the planning tool. You know the route, or the distance you want to cover, and you want to know what that looks like on a step counter.
It is a useful direction to work in, because distance and steps live in different worlds. Your route is measured in miles. Your goal is set in steps. Almost nobody can convert between the two in their head, which is how people end up walking three miles a day and wondering why the round number on their wrist is still out of reach.
Below is the arithmetic, why the answer depends so much on your height, and the more interesting question sitting behind all of it: where the number you are aiming at came from, and whether it deserves the authority it has.
A worked example
A 3-mile route, walked by a 5'10" man.
Step length = 70 inches × 0.415 = 29.05 inches
Distance in inches = 3 × 5,280 × 12 = 190,080 inches
Steps = 190,080 ÷ 29.05 = about 6,543 steps
That is the whole calculation: turn the distance into inches, divide by how many inches you cover per step. The tool converts your height for you, and the only judgement it makes is that step-length estimate.
The same mile is a different number of steps for different people
Here is the thing worth taking from this page, and it undermines a lot of step-goal culture.
Take that same 3-mile route and send two people down it:

Same route. Same time, roughly. Same effort, arguably more for the shorter walker, since she has to move her legs more often to keep up. And she finishes with 1,200 more steps on her counter, about 20 percent more, for identical work.
Which means a shared step target is not a shared target at all. A 10,000-step goal asks a 5'2" person to walk about 4.0 miles and a 6'2" person to walk about 4.9. Or, read the other way, the taller person hits the goal after less walking. Office step challenges are, among other things, a height competition.
None of this makes step goals useless. It does mean that if you are comparing your count with someone of a very different height, you are not comparing the same thing.
Where 10,000 steps came from
Since it is almost certainly the number you are converting towards, it is worth knowing its origin, which is not what most people assume.
In 1965, a Japanese company called Yamasa Tokei released one of the first consumer pedometers. The country was fresh off the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and in the middle of a fitness enthusiasm, and the device needed a name. They called it the Manpo-kei, which translates as "10,000 steps meter". The Japanese character for 10,000, 万, happens to look rather like a person mid-stride, which made it a neat fit for the branding.
That is the origin of the world's most widely followed fitness target. It was a product name. Yoshiro Hatano, the researcher associated with it, reasoned that Japanese people were walking around 3,500 to 5,000 steps a day and that pushing that to 10,000 would burn enough extra calories to matter. That was an estimate, not a trial.
The epidemiologist I-Min Lee, who has spent years studying step counts and mortality at Harvard, has put it about as plainly as it can be put: when the device launched, there were no studies that had looked at 10,000 steps at all. It was a slogan, picked because it was round and memorable.
Which is not an argument against it. It is a good, catchy, achievable-ish number, and it got millions of people walking, which is more than most evidence-based recommendations manage. It just was never a scientific threshold, and it should not be treated as a line between healthy and unhealthy.
What the evidence actually says
The research arrived decades after the pedometer, done by people who were not selling anything. It keeps landing below 10,000.
Lee's own 2019 study followed 16,741 older women, average age 72, measuring their steps with hip-worn accelerometers rather than asking them. Two findings stand out. Women averaging around 4,400 steps a day had significantly lower mortality than those averaging around 2,700. And the benefit kept improving up to roughly 7,500 steps a day, then flattened out. More steps beyond that did not reduce mortality further.
A 2025 systematic review pooling 57 studies and more than 160,000 people looked at eight outcomes at once, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia and depression. It landed on 7,000 steps a day as the point associated with clinically meaningful improvement across all of them, and concluded that 7,000 is a more realistic target for most people than 10,000.
The size of the effect between a sedentary day and 7,000 steps is genuinely large. Moving from around 2,000 steps a day to around 7,000 has been associated with substantially lower risk across the board: roughly 47 percent lower all-cause mortality, about 38 percent lower dementia risk, about 37 percent lower cancer mortality, about 25 percent lower cardiovascular disease, and meaningful reductions in depression, falls and type 2 diabetes.
Read that curve carefully, because the shape is the message. The enormous gains are in the first few thousand steps, from sedentary to moderately active. The gains from 7,000 to 10,000 are real but small. So:
- If you are on 2,000 steps a day, getting to 5,000 is worth more than anything else in your health week.
- If you are on 7,000, congratulations, you have collected almost all of the available benefit.
- If you are on 9,500 and feel bad about not hitting 10,000, you have been sold a marketing target from 1965.
What the popular step goals look like in miles
Converting the common targets, so you can see what you are actually being asked to walk:

The useful reframing here: 7,000 steps is a bit over three miles for most people, which at a normal pace is roughly an hour of walking spread across a day. Put that way it sounds like a thing a person could do, which "10,000 steps" somehow never quite does.
Pace matters, and the formula cannot see it
Everything above counts steps. None of it counts how hard you were working, and that is the gap in step goals generally.
Ten thousand steps shuffled around a house over sixteen hours is not the same event as ten thousand steps walked briskly. Research consistently finds that intensity carries benefit over and above volume, and the useful threshold is cadence: around 100 steps per minute is roughly where walking becomes moderate intensity, the level that most activity guidance is built around. Vigorous walking runs nearer 130 steps a minute.
That translates neatly. About 3,000 steps in 30 minutes is 100 steps a minute, so a half-hour brisk walk gives you 3,000 steps that genuinely count as exercise, on top of whatever you accumulate incidentally.
It is also worth noting that the World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and pointedly does not specify a step count. That is a deliberate choice. Steps are a decent proxy for movement and a poor proxy for intensity, and intensity is where a lot of the benefit lives.
Why the answer comes as a range
The tool gives you a band rather than a single number, which is the right instinct for an estimate built on a height-based rule of thumb.
Your real step count for a given route will land somewhere in the region of that band, and where depends on things the formula cannot know: how fast you walked, whether the route was flat, whether you were tired by the end, what shoes you had on. Uphill sections shorten your step and inflate your count. A brisk pace lengthens your step and deflates it. The tool does not know your route has a hill in it.
Use the range as a planning estimate: enough to know whether your usual loop is a 6,000-step affair or a 9,000-step one. Do not use it to audit your tracker to the nearest hundred.
A better way to set the number
Since the famous target came from a pedometer box, here is a more defensible way to pick yours.
Start from your actual baseline. Wear whatever you wear for a normal week and do not try. Whatever the average comes out at, that is your real starting point, and it is the only number that matters.
Add, do not aim. The evidence is about improvement rather than thresholds. Adding 2,000 steps a day, roughly a mile, to a low baseline delivers more health return than any target on any packaging. Once that sticks, add another 1,000.
Aim at around 7,000 if you want a destination. It has actual research behind it, it is where the curve flattens, and it is about three miles, which is reachable for most people. If you get to 10,000, excellent, but treat it as a bonus rather than a pass mark.
Buy some of it briskly. A single 30-minute walk at around 100 steps a minute is 3,000 steps that count as moderate exercise, and it beats 3,000 steps of ambling around the kitchen.
Convert your routes once and stop calculating. Work out what your regular loop is worth in steps, and then just know it. "The park loop is 4,000" is a more useful piece of knowledge than any daily readout.

Questions people ask
How many steps is 3 miles?
Around 6,200 to 7,400 depending on your height. A 6'2" walker covers 3 miles in about 6,190 steps; a 5'2" walker needs about 7,423 for the same route. That 20 percent gap is height, not effort, which is why entering your own is worth doing rather than taking an average.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.0 miles if you are 5'2", about 4.6 if you are 5'10", and about 4.9 if you are 6'2". The "5 miles" figure people quote is really a tall person's answer. At a normal walking pace, 10,000 steps is somewhere around 1 hour 20 minutes of walking.
Do I really need 10,000 steps a day?
No. That number came from the name of a 1965 Japanese pedometer, the Manpo-kei, not from research. The evidence that arrived later keeps landing lower: mortality benefit plateaus around 7,500 in one large study, and a 2025 review of 57 studies settled on 7,000 as the point of meaningful improvement across eight health outcomes. 10,000 is fine if you reach it. It is not a pass mark.
Is it unfair that shorter people need more steps?
For a shared step target, yes, a bit. A shorter walker takes about 20 percent more steps to cover the same ground, so a common goal asks more walking of taller people and more steps of shorter ones. If you are competing with a colleague of a very different height, you are partly competing on legs. Comparing distance rather than steps levels it.
I walk fast. Do I need fewer steps?
Fewer for a given distance, yes, since faster walking means longer steps. But that is the wrong way round to think about it: walking briskly is the part that carries the extra health benefit, and around 100 steps a minute is roughly the moderate-intensity threshold. A brisk 7,000 is better than a slow 10,000, even though the slow one wins the scoreboard.
Can I use this to plan a run?
Not with this formula. It assumes walking, and running steps are 40 to 60 percent longer, so it will substantially overstate how many steps a running route takes. For running, distance is the sensible unit anyway, and GPS measures it directly rather than inferring it from your height.
