What this tool does

Every PDF quietly carries hidden information about itself, who made it, with what software, and often a title and keywords. This tool strips those details out and hands you a clean copy, all within your browser so the file is never uploaded.

How to use it

1. Select the PDF file you want to clean.
2. Press Strip MetaData.
3. Download the cleaned copy. Reset clears the tool to do another.

How it works

The tool opens your PDF and empties its document information fields, the title, author, subject, keywords, and the producer and creator entries that name the software used, then saves a fresh copy with those blanks in place. It runs entirely on your device, so the document never leaves your computer.

Why PDF metadata is worth removing

It is easy to forget that a PDF says more than what is printed on its pages. Open the document properties of almost any file and you will often find a real name in the author field, the exact program and version that produced it, and sometimes a title or set of keywords left over from a template. None of that is visible when you read the document, but it travels with the file.

That matters the moment you share a PDF outside your own circle, a CV sent to an employer, a contract going to another company, a report posted publicly. Without thinking about it, you may be handing over your full name, the software your organisation uses, or internal labels you would rather keep to yourself. Clearing the metadata before you send is a simple, sensible habit, the document equivalent of taking the address label off a box before you recycle it.

What it clears, and what to know

To be precise about what this does, it empties the standard document properties, which is the metadata most people are concerned about and the part that usually carries your name and software. That covers the common case well. It is worth being aware, though, that a PDF can hold other embedded data too, such as comments and annotations, attached files, or information tucked inside embedded images. For an ordinary document you are tidying up before sharing, clearing the properties is the right step; for a highly sensitive file that needs to be fully scrubbed, a dedicated redaction process goes further.
