The one lift everyone asks about
"How much do you bench?" is the question the whole gym understands, which is why the bench press, more than any other lift, is the one people want a number for. This tool gives you that number: your estimated one-rep max on the bench, worked out from a set you can already do, so you never have to load the bar to a true max to find out where you stand.
And of all the lifts, the bench is the one where estimating rather than testing matters most. That is not a throwaway line, and there is a whole section on it further down, because the way a bench press fails is genuinely different from the way a squat or deadlift fails.
The formula this calculator uses
This calculator runs the Epley formula, which traces back to strength coach Boyd Epley in 1985 and is one of the most widely used max estimators there is:
1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
In plain terms, it adds roughly three percent to your estimated max for every rep you complete. The tool asks for more than three reps, and that is deliberate: at one, two or three reps you are already so close to your true max that there is nothing meaningful to estimate, and the formula does its best work across a moderate set of, say, five to ten. One thing to note on the output, the result comes back in kilograms. If you happen to use a different max estimator elsewhere and get a slightly lower figure, that is likely the Brzycki formula our general One Rep Max tool uses, which reads a touch more conservatively than Epley below 10 reps.
A worked example
Say you benched 70 kg for 6 solid reps. Through Epley:
1RM = 70 × (1 + 6 ÷ 30)
1RM = 70 × 1.2 ≈ 84 kg
So your estimated bench max is about 84 kg. For comparison, the more conservative Brzycki formula would put the same set closer to 81 kg, which is the couple-of-kilos gap between the two methods in action. Either way, you now have a training figure without ever having risked a true single.
What counts as a good bench press
Once you have a number, the natural next question is whether it is any good, and the fairest way to judge a bench is against your own body weight rather than a fixed figure, since a 60 kg lifter and a 100 kg lifter are not playing the same game.
As a rough guide for men, pressing about half your body weight is a beginner starting point, your full body weight for a single is a genuinely respectable intermediate milestone that takes most people a year or two of consistent training, and around one and a half times body weight sits firmly in advanced territory. For women, the same milestones land lower, with roughly half body weight marking solid intermediate strength. These are broad markers, not official grades, and they shift with age, limb length and how long you have trained, so treat them as a compass rather than a scorecard.
Why you should never ego-max the bench alone
This is the section that matters more than the number. When a squat or a deadlift gets too heavy, you can bail: dump the bar off your back, or simply set it down. The bench press gives you no such exit. If you fail a rep with the bar over your chest and no one there, it comes down on top of you, across your ribs or, worse, your throat, and you cannot lift it off. Every year people are seriously hurt, and some are killed, doing exactly this alone at home.
That is the real reason a tool like this is worth using. Estimating your max from a comfortable set means you get the number you wanted without ever putting yourself under a bar you cannot escape. If you do decide to test a true bench max, do it with a switched-on spotter, or in a rack with the safety pins set just above chest height so a failed rep lands on steel instead of on you. No estimate is worth an injury, and no bench number is worth your safety.
Where the number can be off
An estimated bench max is a solid training figure, not a certified lift, and the usual honest limits apply:
- It is a prediction. The formula gives a well-educated guess, usually within a few percent, but the only way to truly know your max is to lift it, safely.
- It leans on an honest set. Short reps, a bounce off the chest, or a rep count you could not really repeat will inflate the result. Clean, full-range reps give a clean estimate.
- Accuracy fades as reps climb. Epley does its best work across a moderate set; feed it a very high-rep effort and the number drifts upward, away from reality.
- The day matters. Sleep, food, stress and fatigue all move your real bench around from one session to the next, and no formula can account for that.
Questions people ask
Why is my result in kilograms when I entered pounds?
The tool converts your lift to kilograms and reports the max in kilograms. If you think in pounds, multiply the result by about 2.2 to convert it back.
Why does it need more than three reps?
Because at one to three reps you are already lifting close to your true max, so there is little to estimate. The formula is at its most useful across a moderate set, which is why it asks for more.
How do I actually improve my bench?
Progress the weight gradually over weeks, train the press a couple of times a week with enough sets, and do not neglect the supporting muscles, your triceps, shoulders and back. Recalculate here as your working sets get easier.
Is this different from the One Rep Max Calculator?
Only in the formula. This one runs Epley and frames everything around the bench; the general tool runs the more conservative Brzycki equation. Use whichever number you prefer, and expect them to sit within a couple of kilos of each other.
