The honest answer up front

You did a set of push-ups and you want to know what they burned. Here is the honest answer before the maths: fewer calories than you are probably hoping, and that is completely fine, because burning calories is not really what push-ups are for.

A few minutes of push-ups burns a modest number of calories, on the order of a small snack, not a meal. This page will give you a fair estimate of that number, show you exactly how it is worked out, and then, more usefully, explain why the calorie count is the least interesting thing about the exercise you just did.

How the calculator works it out

The tool uses the standard MET method, the same one behind most calories-burned estimates. A MET is a multiple of the energy you burn at rest, and each activity is assigned a value. This calculator uses two:

  • Moderate effort push-ups: 3.8 METs
  • Vigorous effort push-ups: 8.0 METs

It takes your chosen intensity, your body weight and how long you were going, and runs:

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) × time (minutes) ÷ 200

One thing to get right for a sensible answer: the duration should be the time you were actually doing push-ups, not your whole workout. Push-ups come in short sets with rest between them, and if you enter the full session, rests and all, the estimate will run high, because the formula assumes you were moving the entire time.

A worked example

Take a 70 kilogram person doing 3 minutes of genuinely vigorous push-ups, at 8.0 METs:

Calories = 8.0 × 3.5 × 70 × 3 ÷ 200
Calories ≈ 29 kcal

So three hard minutes of push-ups comes to roughly 29 calories. That is the honest scale of it, and it sets up the next point nicely, because the tool also shows a per-hour figure, and that number deserves a warning.

Why the per-hour figure is a fantasy

Alongside the total, the tool reports calories burned per hour. Taken at face value it looks impressive, something like 588 calories an hour for vigorous push-ups. Ignore it as a real target, because it describes something that cannot happen: nobody does push-ups continuously for an hour. You would fail, probably within a few minutes, long before your muscles let you keep that pace.

That figure is simply your per-minute burn multiplied out to sixty minutes, a mathematical stretch, not a workout you could ever do. Push-ups are a strength exercise performed in bursts, not a cardio activity you sustain. So read the total for your actual minutes, and treat the per-hour number as a curiosity rather than a goal.

What push-ups are really for

Here is why the calorie count sells push-ups short. Their real payoff is not the handful of calories burned while you do them; it is what they build. Push-ups train your chest, shoulders, triceps and core, and that strength work pays off in a way a treadmill session does not.

The reason is muscle. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, and how much of it you carry is one of the strongest drivers of how many calories you burn at rest, all day, doing nothing. Build a little muscle through consistent training and your resting burn nudges up and stays up, which quietly dwarfs the calories from any single set. There is also a small afterburn as your body recovers from hard effort. None of this shows up in the number on the screen, which only counts the minutes you were moving. So if you are doing push-ups, judge them by the strength you gain, not the calories the tool reports.

Where the estimate is rough

A push-up calorie figure is a loose ballpark, and a couple of honest limits explain why:

  • It assumes steady, continuous effort. Real push-ups are done in sets with rest, so unless you enter only your active time, the estimate overshoots.
  • Intensity is hard to judge. The gap between moderate and vigorous is large, and how hard your set truly was is a matter of feel, not a dial the tool can read.
  • The baseline runs a little generous. Like every MET estimate, the standard resting value it is built on overstates the burn for many people, so the real figure may be lower still.

Questions people ask

How many calories does one push-up burn?

Very roughly a fraction of a calorie for most people, so a set of twenty might be somewhere around three to eight calories depending on your weight and pace. The per-rep number is tiny, which is exactly why push-ups are a strength move, not a calorie-burning one.

Can push-ups help me lose weight?

Indirectly, and more than the calorie count suggests. They build muscle, and more muscle raises the calories you burn at rest over time. As a direct calorie burn during the set, though, they are minor, so pair them with your eating and overall activity rather than relying on them alone.

What should I enter for duration?

Only the time you were actually doing push-ups, not your whole workout including rests. Enter the full session and the estimate will read too high.

Moderate or vigorous, which should I pick?

Vigorous fits fast, near-continuous sets that leave you breathing hard; moderate fits a slower, controlled pace with pauses. If in doubt, moderate is the safer choice, since most people overrate their intensity.
