What the decimal to time converter does

This is the reverse of turning time into a decimal. You give it a decimal value, like 1.5, and it gives you back readable time, 1 hour and 30 minutes. It works whether your decimal is a number of hours or a number of minutes, so it copes with both ways a decimal might turn up. It is the tool for making a bare decimal figure mean something again.

How to use it

1. Enter Decimal Value. The decimal number, such as 1.5 or 2.75.
2. Select Input Type. Say whether the decimal is in hours or in minutes.

How the conversion works

If your decimal is in hours, the whole number is the hours, and the fraction left over is turned into minutes by multiplying by 60. So in 1.5 hours, the 1 is an hour and the 0.5 becomes 0.5 times 60, which is 30 minutes. If your decimal is instead a count of minutes, it works out how many whole hours fit into that many minutes and what minutes are left over. Either way you end up with a clean hours-and-minutes answer.

If the decimal works out to a partial minute, the result is rounded to the nearest whole minute.

Why you would convert back to time

Decimals are great for the maths but poor for reading. A payslip, an invoice, or a tracking app will often show time as a decimal, and a figure like 1.75 hours does not immediately tell you how long that is. Converting it back to 1 hour 45 minutes makes it human again, which matters when you are checking that a paid or billed amount of time looks right. It is the other half of the round trip: time becomes a decimal to be calculated, then becomes time again to be understood.

A few examples

• 1.5 hours is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
• 2.25 hours is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
• 0.75 hours is 45 minutes.
• 1.1 hours is 1 hour and 6 minutes, since 0.1 of an hour is 6 minutes.

That last one is a good reminder that the decimal is a fraction of an hour, not minutes directly, so 1.1 is not 1 hour 10 minutes.
