What this converter does

This takes a big number of seconds and turns it into a duration you can read, broken down into years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. A raw figure like 100,000 seconds means very little at a glance, but "1 day 3 hours 46 minutes 40 seconds" lands straight away. It is built for the large second counts that come out of systems, where the number itself is too big to picture.

How the breakdown is built

It works from the largest unit down. It sees how many whole years fit into your seconds, takes those away, then does the same for months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes in turn, with whatever is left over being the seconds. Each step uses up part of the total, so the parts add back up to what you started with. Units that come out as zero are left off, so a short duration just shows minutes and seconds rather than a row of empty years and months.

Which units are exact, and which are rounded

This is worth knowing so you read the result correctly. The smaller units are exact, because they are fixed sizes: a minute is always 60 seconds, an hour 3,600, a day 86,400, a week exactly seven days. The years and months are where it gets approximate. Here a year is treated as 365 days and a month as 30 days, which are round, average figures rather than the real calendar, where years can be 366 days and months run from 28 to 31. So for a short duration the breakdown is spot on, but for a span of several years the years-and-months part is a close approximation, not a calendar-exact one. If you need the precise calendar gap between two actual dates, a date-based duration tool is the better fit.

An example

Take 100,000 seconds. That is 1 day, which uses 86,400, leaving 13,600 seconds. From those come 3 hours, using 10,800, leaving 2,800. That is 46 minutes, using 2,760, leaving 40 seconds. So 100,000 seconds reads as 1 day, 3 hours, 46 minutes, and 40 seconds. The number on its own told you nothing; the breakdown tells you it is just over a day.

Where it comes in handy

Mostly with values that machines produce. System uptime is often reported as a count of seconds, and this turns it into days and hours you can read. The same goes for elapsed times in logs, durations stored in seconds, and any large second value where you want a sense of how long it really is rather than a number with five or six digits.
