What this converter does

This takes a total number of minutes and breaks it into hours, minutes, and seconds. So 90 minutes becomes 1h 30m 0s. Once a minute count climbs past an hour or two, it stops being easy to picture, and this turns it back into the familiar hours-and-minutes shape that actually means something at a glance.

How to use it

  1. Minutes. Enter the total number of minutes, such as 90 or 150.

Press Convert and it shows the time as hours, minutes, and seconds.

How the conversion works

It works out how many whole hours fit into your minutes by dividing by 60, then keeps the leftover minutes. So 150 minutes holds 2 full hours, which accounts for 120 minutes, leaving 30 minutes over. If you enter a decimal number of minutes, the fractional part becomes seconds, since a fraction of a minute is some number of seconds. The result is laid out as hours, minutes, and seconds.

Why big minute counts are worth breaking up

Minutes are handy for adding up, but a large total hides its real size. Told that something took 150 minutes, most people have to pause and work out that it is two and a half hours. Timers, duration reports, and tracked totals often come out as a raw minute count for exactly that adding-up reason, and breaking the number back into hours and minutes makes it readable again. It is the difference between a figure you have to decode and one you immediately understand.

An example

Take 150 minutes. Dividing by 60 gives 2 whole hours, using up 120 minutes and leaving 30. So 150 minutes is 2h 30m 0s. If you entered 90.5 minutes, that is 1 hour and 30 minutes, with the half minute coming through as 30 seconds, giving 1h 30m 30s.

Questions people ask

How do I convert minutes to H:M:S?

Divide the minutes by 60 for the whole hours, keep the remainder as minutes, and turn any fraction of a minute into seconds. So 90 minutes is 1h 30m 0s.

How long is 150 minutes?

2 hours and 30 minutes, since 150 is two lots of 60 with 30 left over.

What if I have a decimal number of minutes?

The fraction becomes seconds. Half a minute is 30 seconds, so 90.5 minutes comes out as 1h 30m 30s.

How do I turn H:M:S back into minutes?

Use an H:M:S-to-minutes converter, which takes a time like 1h 30m and gives you 90 minutes.
