What this converter does

This turns a time given as hours, minutes, and seconds into one total number of minutes. So 1 hour 30 minutes becomes 90 minutes. It is useful whenever minutes are the unit you are working in, like a log, a report, or a calculation, and you would rather have a single figure than juggle hours and seconds alongside it.

How to use it

  1. Hours, Minutes, Seconds. Enter each part of the time.

Press Convert and it shows the total in minutes.

How the conversion works

The simplest way to picture it is to drop everything to seconds first, then climb back to minutes. The hours become seconds by multiplying by 3,600, the minutes by multiplying by 60, and the seconds are already seconds. Add them up and divide the total by 60, and you have the time in minutes. Any leftover seconds show up as a decimal, so 90 seconds on the end would read as 1.5 minutes rather than being dropped.

Why a single minutes figure helps

Minutes sit in a useful middle ground. They are fine-grained enough for most timing, but small enough in number to add up and compare easily. If you are logging how long tasks took, totalling durations, or feeding a calculation that expects minutes, having each time as one minute figure keeps things tidy. It is easier to add 90 and 45 minutes than to add 1 hour 30 minutes to 45 minutes in your head.

An example

Take 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds. The 2 hours is 7,200 seconds, the 5 minutes is 300 seconds, and the 30 seconds make 7,530 seconds in all. Divide by 60 and you get 125.5 minutes. The half minute is the 30 seconds carried through as a decimal.

Questions people ask

How do I convert H:M:S to minutes?

Multiply the hours by 60 to get minutes, add the minutes, and add the seconds divided by 60. So 1 hour 30 minutes is 60 plus 30, which is 90 minutes.

What happens to the seconds?

They become a fraction of a minute. Thirty seconds is half a minute, so it adds 0.5 to the total rather than being ignored.

How many minutes is 1 hour 30 minutes?

90 minutes, since the hour is 60 minutes and you add the 30.

How do I turn minutes back into H:M:S?

Use a minutes-to-H:M:S converter, which takes a figure like 90 and turns it into 1h 30m 0s.
