How the breakdown works

It works from the largest unit down. It sees how many whole hours fit into your seconds and takes them out, then how many whole minutes fit into what is left, and whatever remains is the seconds. So the total is split cleanly into hours, minutes, and seconds that add back up to what you started with. Each of these units is a fixed size, an hour is always 3,600 seconds and a minute always 60, so this part of the conversion is exact.

When the value is very large

Hours, minutes, and seconds are perfect up to a point, but a truly huge seconds count would give an unwieldy number of hours, so for large values this also rolls the time up into bigger units, showing days, and beyond them weeks, months, and years, on top of the hours, minutes, and seconds. That keeps even an enormous figure readable. Worth knowing: the days and weeks are exact, since a day is always 24 hours and a week 7 days, but the months and years use average lengths, a 30-day month and a 365-day year, so once the breakdown reaches that far those two units are close approximations rather than exact. For the everyday hours, minutes, and seconds range, everything is exact.
