What this tool does

A Pantone number names a brand's ink, and an HSV value is what a colour picker hands you. When a colour owned as a Pantone, say 16-1546 (Living Coral), needs to go into an image editor, where the picker works in hue, saturation, and value, the Pantone reference has to become HSV first. Otherwise there is no clean way to enter the colour and start working with it.

That is what this does. You give it a Pantone colour, and it returns the same colour as HSV, three numbers for hue, saturation, and value that a picker understands. Below the tool there is a plain explanation of what those numbers mean and how a fixed ink reference is carried into the model image editors use.

How to use it

  1. Enter your Pantone colour. Select your Pantone colour, such as 16-1546 (Living Coral), from the list.
  2. Read the HSV result. Out come the hue in degrees and the saturation and value as percentages, right away.
  3. Carry it across. Bring the HSV numbers into your image editor's colour picker, or treat them as a base to work from.

How it works

The conversion runs in two moves. First the tool looks up the screen colour that represents your Pantone ink, since each Pantone number has a known equivalent held in a table. Then that screen colour, stored as red, green, and blue, is re-expressed as a hue, a saturation, and a value. The first move is a look-up; the second is a direct change of form into what a picker uses.

So a Pantone number becomes a set of HSV values with no colour invented on the way. The ink's agreed screen equivalent is simply described in HSV's terms rather than RGB's. What you gain is three numbers laid out the way an editor presents a colour, where the Pantone number gave you nothing a picker could take directly.

What HSV actually is

HSV stands for hue, saturation, and value, and you will also see it written HSB, where brightness is another word for value. The hue picks out the colour, an angle from 0 to 360 degrees around the wheel. The saturation, a percentage, is how pure the colour is, from grey to full strength. The value, also a percentage, is how bright it is, from black at the bottom up to the colour at its fullest.

The model caught on because it mirrors the way pickers are built. You choose a hue from a strip, then drag through a square whose two axes are saturation and value, and that square is HSV drawn flat. The top of the value scale is the pure colour rather than white, the detail that separates HSV from HSL, and it is what makes HSV the model behind most software colour pickers.

How a Pantone becomes HSV

The two belong to different worlds. A Pantone colour is a physical ink named by a number, chosen from a standard set and meant to print exactly. HSV is a perceptual description of a screen colour, shaped around how a picker presents one. Getting between them means first finding the ink's screen equivalent, then describing that equivalent in the picker's terms.

In practice the tool reads the screen colour paired with your Pantone number, then works out the value, saturation, and hue from its red, green, and blue channels. The Pantone-to-screen step is a look-up of a known match, and the screen-to-HSV step is an exact re-description. Together they turn a fixed ink reference into a colour a picker can take.

Why convert Pantone to HSV

The usual reason is that the colour has to enter an image editor. Most editors and pickers work in HSV, so a brand colour held as a Pantone number has to become HSV before you can set it precisely in the picker rather than nudging sliders toward it. The conversion is what makes that exact entry possible.

It also suits the work editors are built for. Once the colour is in HSV, raising or lowering its brightness behaves predictably, since value runs cleanly from black to the full colour, which helps with shading, highlighting, and building variations. So when a Pantone colour needs to be edited or built upon in software, HSV is the form that fits the tools.

Bringing a Pantone into an editor

It helps to see this conversion as moving a colour from one craft into another. As a Pantone, the colour lived as a fixed ink reference, set for a press and not meant to be altered. Bringing it into an editor changes its role: it becomes a colour you can select, sample, and reshape with the tools an editor gives you.

HSV is what makes that move painless, since it is the very language the editor's picker is built around. Typing in the converted hue, saturation, and value places the colour precisely where you want it, ready to tune by eye. That shift, from a fixed ink reference to a colour live inside an editor, is the whole point of converting, and HSV is what carries it across cleanly.
