What this tool does

HSV values such as 275, 100 percent, 51 percent fix a colour precisely for a picker, but they are not something you can say aloud and have someone picture. A name like "Indigo" does that in an instant. People lean on words when they talk about colour, while software keeps it in numbers, and crossing that gap is what this is for.

That is what this does. You give it hue, saturation, and value values, and it returns the closest colour name, shown beside the colour itself. An exact but wordless set of figures becomes a name you can speak, note down, and remember, which is usually far more useful when a person is at the other end.

How to use it

  1. Enter your HSV values. Set the hue from 0 to 360 and the saturation and value as percentages, or pick a colour using the picker.
  2. Read the name. The closest matching colour name appears for your values, set beside the colour they produce.
  3. Put it to use. Take the name to describe or label the colour, with the swatch alongside as a quick visual check.

How it works

The naming runs on Name That Color, a library built for precisely this. It holds a long catalogue of named colours, each pinned to a fixed value, and when it receives a colour it gauges the distance between yours and every entry, then returns the one that lands nearest. Your HSV values are turned into the colour first, so the comparison runs on the colour itself.

That word, nearest, is the crux. Your exact HSV values will only now and then coincide with a catalogued colour, so most of the time the tool is picking out the closest neighbour rather than an exact hit. The result is the best name available for your colour, which is nearly always what you are after, even when it is not a perfect match.

Why colours have names

Names exist because numbers are hard to pass along and easy to lose track of. People named colours long before anyone wrote them as values, and words like crimson, teal, and amber still bring an immediate, shared picture to mind that a string of figures cannot. Most values are less tidy. A colour a little off from Indigo is not Indigo, yet the tool will still offer that as the closest name, because it is the best fit available. So read the result in that spirit: now and then the name is exact, and more often it is the nearest landmark to a colour that has no name of its own.
