What this tool does

A CMYK value like 0, 50, 100, 0 is a precise instruction to a printer, but it is not something you can say to a person and have them picture. A name like "Orange" does that at once. People reach for words when they talk about colour, while a press works in ink percentages, and putting a name to a print colour is what crosses that gap.

That is what this does. You give it cyan, magenta, yellow, and key values, and it returns the closest colour name, shown beside the colour itself. A set of ink percentages becomes a word you can say, write down, and remember, which is usually far more useful than the numbers when you are describing a colour to someone.

How to use it

  1. Enter your CMYK values. Set the cyan, magenta, yellow, and key values, each as a decimal from 0 to 1 (for example, 0.2 rather than 20), or pick a colour using the picker.
  2. Read the name. Out comes the closest matching colour name for your values, beside the colour they make.
  3. Put it to use. Use the name to describe or label the colour, the swatch beside it for a quick visual check.

How it works

The colour is named by Name That Color, a library built for the task. Your CMYK values are first turned into a screen colour, since the names are organised by screen value, and that colour is then measured against a long catalogue of named colours, with the nearest one returned. Each name in the catalogue has its own fixed value to compare against.

The key word is nearest. Your exact ink mix will only occasionally line up with a catalogued colour, so most of the time the tool is finding the closest neighbour rather than a perfect match. The result is the best name available for your colour, which is nearly always what you want, even when it is not an exact hit.

Why colours have names

Names exist because numbers are hard to share and easy to forget, and a row of ink percentages is no exception. People named colours long before anyone measured them, and words like teal, coral, and olive still bring an instant, shared picture to mind that 0, 50, 100, 0 never will. A name is something you can say in a meeting, write in a brief, or recall a week later.

Screens carry that habit into their own world. The CSS standard lists a set of colours you can call by name rather than by number, words like orange, tomato, and gold that each map to a fixed value. That official list is short, though, so the names this kind of tool can return come from much larger collections built up over time, which together attach names to thousands of points across the colour space.

Finding the nearest name

It is worth being clear about what the result is. The colours a press can mix run into the thousands and beyond, while named colours number only a few thousand, so the names sit across the colour space like scattered landmarks, with wide gaps between them that carry no name at all. When you look up a value, the tool returns the landmark nearest to where your colour falls.

One effect is that a range of slightly different CMYK mixes can all return the same name, because they all sit closest to the same landmark. That is not the tool being vague; it is the plain truth that small colour differences are real but mostly unnamed. The name pins down the neighbourhood your colour lives in, which is usually all the description a person needs.

Why name a CMYK value

The usual reason is communication. When you are discussing a print colour with a client, a colleague, or a supplier, a name carries a meaning that four ink percentages do not. Saying "the background is Teal" lands at once, where reading out a CMYK value does not, and it is far easier to remember and repeat.

It also helps you make sense of colours you did not choose. A name gives you a fast handle on an unfamiliar ink mix, a quick read on roughly what it is without rendering it. Designers use it to put the colours in a print spec into plain language, to write clearer documentation, and simply to give words to values that would otherwise stay as anonymous percentages.

How close the match really is

It helps to know how exact the result is, because it varies from colour to colour. Some CMYK mixes land squarely on a named colour once converted, and for those the name is a true identity you can rely on. They are the lucky cases where the ink recipe happens to point right at a named point.

Most mixes are less tidy. A colour a little off from a named one is not that colour, yet the tool will still offer the name as the closest fit, because it is the best available. So take the result that way: every now and then the name is exact, and more often it is the closest named point to a colour with no name of its own. Either way it is the most useful word to hand, which is why you would look it up.
