What the fat-burning zone calculator does

The fat-burning zone is a heart-rate range often used to guide steady cardio. This tool estimates it for you. You enter your age, your resting heart rate, and a calculation method, and it returns a heart-rate range in beats per minute.

The idea behind the zone is genuine, but it is also widely misunderstood, so as well as the number this page explains what the zone really means and what it does not.

How to use it

  1. Enter your age.
  2. Enter your resting heart rate, ideally measured first thing in the morning before getting up. It is used by the Karvonen method below.
  3. Choose a calculation method.

What the fat-burning zone actually is

Your body fuels exercise with a mix of fat and carbohydrate, and the balance shifts with intensity. At lower intensities, a higher proportion of your energy comes from fat. As you work harder, that balance tilts toward carbohydrate. The fat-burning zone is simply the lower-to-moderate range, usually put at around 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate, where the share of energy coming from fat is at its highest. That is the real and uncontroversial part of the idea.

The three methods

The tool offers three ways to work out the range, which arrive at a similar moderate band by different routes:

  • 60 to 80% of maximum heart rate. Your maximum heart rate is estimated as 220 minus your age, and the zone is 60 to 80 percent of that.
  • The Zoladz method. This sets the zone as your maximum heart rate minus fixed amounts, producing a band a little below your maximum.
  • The Karvonen method. This works from your heart rate reserve, which is your maximum heart rate minus your resting heart rate, and takes 60 to 80 percent of that reserve before adding your resting rate back. It is the only one of the three that uses your resting heart rate, which is why your own resting figure personalises the result.

An important nuance

Here is the part that the treadmill labels leave out, and it is worth getting right. Burning a higher proportion of fat is not the same as burning more fat, or more calories. Higher-intensity exercise burns more total calories in the same amount of time, even though a smaller share of them comes from fat in the moment. On top of that, the exact intensity at which fat burning peaks varies a great deal from one person to the next, shaped by fitness, diet, and other factors, so there is no single magic heart rate that works for everyone. The honest takeaway is that the zone is a useful guide, not a switch, and that what happens to your body over time depends on your overall activity and energy balance across the week, not on pinning your heart rate to one exact number on any given day.

Why the zone is still worth using

None of that makes the zone pointless, because its real value is a practical one. Lower-to-moderate effort is comfortable and sustainable: you can hold it for a long time, it feels manageable, and it is easy to recover from afterwards. That makes it the backbone of most sensible training, where the bulk of the work is done at an easy-to-moderate pace and only a smaller share at hard efforts. Steady time in this range builds your aerobic base, the engine that underpins endurance, and lets you accumulate plenty of movement without beating yourself up. So treat the zone as a helpful target for relaxed, conversational cardio, which is a genuinely good thing to do, rather than as a fat-loss shortcut.

A note on accuracy and health

Two practical points. First, the 220-minus-age figure for maximum heart rate is an estimate, and an individual's true maximum can sit around ten beats either side of it, so the zone is a rough range rather than a precise line. A good cross-check is how you feel: in this range you should be working but still able to hold a conversation. Second, if you have a heart condition, take any medication that affects your heart rate, or are coming back to exercise after a long break, it is worth a word with your doctor before leaning on heart-rate targets, since the formulas above are general estimates and not tailored to you.
