Swimming is one of the most complete forms of exercise, and this tool estimates the energy a swim uses. You choose your swimming style and effort level, add your weight and time, and it returns an estimated calorie burn.

How the estimate works
Each swimming style is assigned an effort rating, a MET value, which expresses how many times harder than resting that activity is. The tool takes the rating for the stroke and effort you chose and combines it with your weight and your time, using the standard relationship that calories burned rise with the effort rating, your body weight, and how long you keep going. A higher MET, a heavier swimmer, or a longer swim each raises the total. The stroke you select is what sets that effort rating, which is why the choice carries so much weight.
Why the stroke matters so much
Swimming strokes are not remotely equal in their demands, and the spread is enormous. At the gentle end, relaxed treading water or an easy backstroke is light work, only a few times harder than resting. At the other end, butterfly is one of the most demanding activities there is, working the whole body hard against the water, with an effort rating several times that of the easy options. An intense crawl or breaststroke sits high up too. So the same person, swimming for the same length of time, can burn dramatically different amounts depending only on the stroke and how hard they push, which is why a single time figure means little until you say what you were actually doing in the water. The effort ratings are population averages, and real energy use depends on your technique, your fitness, and how efficiently you move through the water, which varies a lot between swimmers, so a smooth, practised swimmer and a thrashing beginner doing the same stroke will not burn the same amount.
