What this calculator does

Most calorie tools start from the activity you did. This one starts from your body instead. You enter your sex, age, weight, the length of your workout, and your average heart rate during it, with the option to add your VO2 max, and it estimates the calories you burned.

Because it works from your heart rate rather than from a fixed figure for an activity, it can be applied to almost any kind of exercise, and it adapts to how hard your body was actually working.

How to use it

  3. Enter your average heart rate for the session, and your VO2 max if you have it.

How it works: heart rate instead of activity

The tool uses a published research equation that links heart rate to energy expenditure. The idea behind it is that your heart rate is a window onto how hard your body is working: the faster it beats, the more oxygen your muscles are using, and the more energy you are spending. The equation combines your average heart rate with your weight, age, and sex, each of which shapes that relationship, to estimate the calories per minute, then multiplies by your workout's length. There are separate versions for men and women, because the heart-rate-to-energy relationship differs between them.

Why this can be more personal

This is the real strength of the heart-rate approach. A method built on activity ratings assumes everyone doing the same activity works equally hard, which is rarely true. By reading your actual heart rate, this calculator responds to what your body did on the day. If a hill or the heat pushed your heart rate up, the estimate rises with it. And because it does not care what the activity was, only what your heart did, it works across the board, for a spin class, a circuit session, a tough hike, or a sport that has no tidy effort rating of its own. It turns your own cardiovascular response into the measure, rather than a one-size-fits-all average.

What VO2 max adds

VO2 max is a measure of your aerobic fitness, the most oxygen your body can use, and the equation can fold it in if you know it. Including it sharpens the estimate, because two people can share the same heart rate while burning energy at different rates depending on their fitness, and VO2 max captures some of that difference. It is an optional input, though, and most people do not have a measured figure to hand. Without it, the calculator falls back on a version that relies on heart rate, weight, age, and sex alone, which still gives a reasonable estimate; with it, the number is a little more tailored to you.

An example with real numbers

Take a 30-year-old man weighing 80 kg who exercises for 30 minutes at an average heart rate of 140 beats per minute, without entering a VO2 max.

  • The equation combines his heart rate, weight, and age into an energy rate per minute
  • Over 30 minutes, that works out to roughly 400 calories

So half an hour at that heart rate comes to around 400 calories for him. A higher average heart rate, or a longer session, would raise the figure.

Reading the number sensibly

For all its personalisation, this is still an estimate, and it is worth knowing where it is at its best. The underlying equation was developed for steady, submaximal exercise, the kind where your heart rate settles at a fairly constant level, so it is most reliable for sustained cardio and less so for very high-intensity efforts or stop-start interval work, where heart rate lags behind what your muscles are doing. It also has a floor: the equation was fitted to people who were exercising, so below roughly 90 beats per minute it is extrapolating past its own evidence, and the tool will tell you so rather than pretend. Its accuracy further rests on a genuinely representative average heart rate, which a chest strap or watch measures far better than a quick pulse check. And as a general note, if you have a heart condition or take medication that affects your heart rate, your numbers may not follow the usual pattern, so it is worth a word with your doctor before reading much into them. Used for steady sessions with a decent heart-rate reading, though, it is one of the more individual estimates available.
