How it works
The calculation is deliberately simple. It takes your dog's weight in pounds and divides it by their height in inches:
BMI = weight (lbs) ÷ height (in)
Whatever units you enter are converted to pounds and inches first, and it all runs on your device. That is the whole sum, which is exactly why the next part matters.
What a dog BMI can and cannot tell you
Here is the honest bit. Unlike people, dogs do not have a standardised, medically validated BMI. The human version works because adults are all roughly the same shape, but dogs are not, a Dachshund and a Greyhound of the same height are built completely differently. So a single weight to height number cannot reliably tell you whether a dog is a healthy weight, and you cannot compare the figure usefully from one breed to another. What it is genuinely useful for is watching one dog over time. If your dog's number climbs while their frame has not changed, that is a nudge worth noticing. Treat it as a tracking tool, not a verdict.
How to really check your dog's weight
For an actual read on whether your dog is the right weight, two things beat any formula. First, the simple rib test, run your hands along their sides, and you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer, without them being sharply visible. From above, look for a gentle waist behind the ribs, and from the side, a tuck up toward the belly. Second, and more thorough, vets use a body condition score, a hands on nine point scale that rates build from too thin to overweight. If you are at all unsure, your vet can score your dog in a minute and give you a target, which is worth far more than a number off a calculator.
