What this does

So you have got a new dog and no name yet, and the pressure is real. This helps. Tap Generate and it gives you a random dog name from a big list, close to a thousand of them. Want a handful to choose between? Set the number and it gives you that many at once. If you have a letter in mind, there are filters to narrow it down.

How to use it

  1. Set Number / Quantity for how many names you want, from 1 to 100.
  2. Tap Generate, and use Copy to keep the ones you like.
  3. To narrow things, use the filters below, Starts with a letter, Contains some letters, or Ends with a letter.

Generate as many times as you like until something feels right.

How it works

The tool holds a large built in list of dog names, and your browser's random generator, Math.random, picks from it. If you set any of the filters, it trims the list to the names that match first, then picks from those. It all runs on your device, and Copy puts your picks on the clipboard. As ever, the honest note, Math.random is pseudo random, which is exactly right for shuffling up some name ideas.

Tips for picking a dog name

A few things make a dog name work in real life. Short wins. One or two syllables is easiest for a dog to learn and easiest for you to call across a busy park. Names that end in a bright vowel sound, like Buddy or Daisy, or a sharp ending, tend to catch a dog's ear. One trick trainers suggest is to avoid names that sound like common commands, so a name like Bo can get muddled with No, and Kit with Sit, which makes training harder than it needs to be. Best test of all, stand at the back door and call the name out loud a few times. If you feel silly, your neighbours will hear it for the next fifteen years, so pick one you are happy shouting.

What people use it for

Mostly a new puppy or a freshly adopted rescue dog that needs a fresh start. People also use it to name a dog character in a story, a comic, or a game, and plenty just browse it for ideas to mix with their own shortlist. Even if you do not pick one straight off the list, seeing names go by often jogs loose the one you actually want.

Questions people ask

How many names can I get at once?

Up to 100 in one go. Set the number, tap Generate, and use Copy to save the batch.

Can I find names starting with a certain letter?

Yes. The Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes narrow the list, so you can get names that begin with B, or contain "lu", or end in "y".

Are the names random?

Yes. Each pick is drawn at random from the list, so generating again gives you a fresh set.

What makes a good dog name?

Short and easy to say, usually one or two syllables, and ideally not too close to a command word like sit or no, which can confuse training.
