What FFMI is, and why not just BMI
FFMI stands for Fat-Free Mass Index. In plain terms, it is a measure of how much muscle you carry for your height. That is the one thing BMI cannot tell you, because BMI lumps fat and muscle together and only sees total weight. Put a lean bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height and weight side by side, and BMI gives them the same score. FFMI does not.
It works by stripping the fat out of the equation first. Take your fat-free mass, everything that is not fat, and scale it to your height, and you get a number that reflects your actual muscularity. This tool needs three things from you: your height, your weight, and your body fat percentage. That last one is doing a lot of the work, which we will come back to.
The formula this calculator uses
There are three short steps, and the tool shows the working. First it finds your fat-free mass, then divides by height squared, then applies a height adjustment:
Fat-free mass = weight − (weight × body fat % ÷ 100)
FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)
The first two lines are the core. The third, normalized FFMI, exists to fix a quirk: taller people tend to score a little lower on the raw FFMI for the same build, so the adjustment nudges everyone to a common 1.8 metre reference height, which makes scores fairer to compare. If you happen to be exactly 1.8 m tall, the two numbers come out the same. The tool reports both, along with your fat-free mass and fat weight in kilograms and pounds.
A worked example
Take someone 175 cm tall (1.75 m), weighing 78 kg, at 15 percent body fat. Working it through:
Fat weight = 78 × 0.15 = 11.7 kg, so fat-free mass = 78 − 11.7 = 66.3 kg
FFMI = 66.3 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 66.3 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 21.65
Normalized FFMI = 21.65 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.75) ≈ 21.95
So this person has an FFMI of about 21.65, or 21.95 once normalized for height. That sits comfortably in the "above average, well-trained" territory for a man, which we can put in context next.
What your FFMI score means
Here is a rough guide to where a normalized FFMI lands for men and women. Treat the edges as fuzzy, not exact lines:

Women naturally run lower, with roughly 15 to 17 being average and the high teens to about 21 to 22 being very muscular, since women carry less muscle and more essential fat than men. An FFMI of 20 for a man means he is more muscular than most of the male population.
The "natural limit" of 25, and where it comes from
You will see FFMI talked about as a way to judge whether a physique is "natural". That idea traces to one specific study, by Kouri and colleagues in 1995, which is worth knowing about honestly rather than taking on faith.
They measured 157 male athletes, split between steroid users and drug-free lifters. The drug-free group topped out at a normalized FFMI of about 25.0, and a set of Mr. America winners from before steroids existed averaged around 25.4. Steroid users often sailed well past 25, some beyond 30. From this, 25 became the widely cited "natural ceiling" for men.
It is a useful rule of thumb, but do not treat it as a hard law. The drug-free sample was small, drug use was self-reported, and rare genetic outliers exist. What the study really shows is that a normalized FFMI above 25 is uncommon without help, not impossible. It is a flag, not a verdict.
Where the number can mislead
The honest limits of an FFMI reading:
- It is only as good as your body fat figure. Everything starts from the body fat percentage you type in. If that is off by a few points, your FFMI shifts with it. For a meaningful score, get your body fat from a decent method rather than a wild guess.
- The ceiling is statistical, not absolute. The natural-limit idea describes what is typical, not a wall physics enforces. Treat borderline scores with humility in both directions.
- It measures muscularity, not health. A high FFMI is not automatically "healthy" and a moderate one is not "unhealthy". It answers one narrow question: how much muscle you carry for your frame.
Used sensibly, it is a much better progress marker than the scale or BMI for anyone lifting weights. Just remember it is built on top of an estimate, so it inherits that estimate's wobble.
Questions people ask
What is a good FFMI?
For a man, an FFMI around 20 to 22 is above average and reflects real training, and 22 to 24 is genuinely strong. For a woman, high teens up to about 21 is very muscular. There is no single "good" score, since it depends on your goals and how long you have trained.
Does an FFMI over 25 mean someone is on steroids?
Not for certain. It means they are past the point most drug-free lifters reach, so it is a reasonable flag, but genetic outliers and measurement error both exist. It is evidence, not proof, which is exactly how the original researchers framed it.
How do I increase my FFMI?
Build muscle, through consistent resistance training and enough protein, while keeping fat gain in check. Since FFMI is fat-free mass over height, and your height is fixed, the only lever is adding lean tissue. It is slow, honest work, and progress gets harder the closer you get to your ceiling.
