What this does
So you are bottling a homebrew and you want it carbonated just right, not flat and not foaming over. This calculator tells you how much priming sugar to add. When you bottle, that sugar feeds the leftover yeast, which produces carbon dioxide inside the sealed bottle and carbonates the beer naturally. Add the right amount and you get a clean fizz, which is exactly what this works out.

Read the table it gives you. The amount in grams is the most reliable, since weighing beats measuring sugar by the cup.
How it works
Your beer already holds some dissolved carbon dioxide left over from fermentation, and how much depends on temperature. Warmer beer holds less, cooler beer holds more. The tool first works out that residual amount from your temperature:
residual CO2 = 3.0378 - (0.050062 × T) + (0.00026555 × T^2)
where T is the temperature in Fahrenheit. It then subtracts that residual from your target, so you only add sugar for the carbonation that is actually missing, scaled to your batch size. That is why a warm-fermented beer needs more priming sugar than a cold one to reach the same fizz.
Using it well
One detail makes a big difference: for the temperature, use the highest temperature your beer reached after fermentation, not the cold temperature it might be sitting at now. That highest point sets how much CO2 stayed in the beer.
For the target, different styles want different fizz. British ales sit low, around 1.5 to 2.0 volumes, American ales around 2.2 to 2.6, and wheat and Belgian styles higher, often 3.5 to 4.5. The sugar table lists a few options, and the crystalline sugars, table, brown, and demerara, all come out the same because they are essentially sucrose, while maple syrup differs. Whichever you use, weigh it, dissolve it in a little boiled water, and stir it through evenly before bottling.
A safety note
This one matters, because too much carbonation is not just messy, it is dangerous. Standard bottles are built to hold around 3 volumes of CO2. Push past that and you risk bottle bombs, where a bottle bursts under pressure. So stay within a sensible range for your style, and if you are aiming high, use thick walled, flip top, or champagne style bottles made for it. Just as important, only bottle beer that has fully finished fermenting, with a stable final gravity over a few days. Bottling early, on top of priming sugar, is the classic recipe for exploding bottles.

The highest temperature the beer reached after fermentation, not its current chilled temperature. That sets how much CO2 is already dissolved.
How many volumes should I aim for?
It depends on the style. Roughly 1.5 to 2.0 for British ales, 2.2 to 2.6 for American ales, and 3.5 to 4.5 for wheat and Belgian beers.
Why weigh the sugar instead of using cups?
Because a cup of sugar varies a lot by how it is packed, and priming is sensitive to the amount. Weighing in grams keeps your carbonation consistent and safe.
