What this does

So the pizza has arrived and you want to tip fairly, not just guess. This calculator helps you land on a sensible number. It takes your order total and weighs up how good the delivery was, whether the weather was rough, and how far the driver had to come, then gives you a tip, the new total, and what each person owes if you are splitting it.

How to use it

  1. Enter the order amount and how many people are splitting it.
  2. Rate the delivery service, and note whether the weather was terrible and how far away you are.
  3. Press Calculate to see the total tip, the tip per person, and the tip percentage.

How it works out the tip

The calculator starts from a percentage of your order and scales it by how good the service was, so better service earns a better tip. On top of that, it adds a little extra when the weather is terrible or the driver came a long way, which is exactly where a bit of generosity is deserved. For small orders it leans on a minimum dollar amount rather than a bare percentage, since a strict percentage of a cheap order would leave the driver short. Because the figure is driven by the service rating you choose, a lower rating gives a lower percentage, so the tool's result can come in below the fifteen to twenty percent general custom. Treat that custom as the benchmark and the tool's number as a service-adjusted suggestion you are free to round up.

What is a fair delivery tip

For a sense of the going rate, the common guideline for food delivery is around 15 to 20 percent of the order, or a minimum of a few dollars on a small order, whichever comes out higher. It is also good manners to tip a bit more when you have made someone drive through a storm or out to the far edge of their range, since that is real effort on your behalf. Tipping customs do vary from country to country, so treat these figures as a US style starting point and adjust to what is normal where you are. Whatever the number, remember that for many drivers tips are a meaningful part of the pay.

Questions people ask

How much should I tip for pizza delivery?

Around 15 to 20 percent of the order is the usual guide, or a few dollars minimum on a small order, whichever is more.

Should I tip more in bad weather?

Yes. A little extra for deliveries in rough weather or over a long distance is customary and well earned.

Do I tip on the total or the subtotal?

For delivery, people commonly tip on the order total. Either way, the percentage is a guide, so round to a number that feels fair for the service you got.
