What this converter does
Few quantities get measured as many ways as weight. Grams and kilograms in the kitchen, pounds and stones on the bathroom scale, carats at the jeweller, troy ounces and tolas at the gold counter: this tool handles the everyday and the specialist units side by side. The specialist units: carats, troy ounces, and tolas
A few of these units trip people up, because they look familiar but do not mean what you would guess.
The carat is for gemstones, and it is small: exactly 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams. So a 1-carat diamond weighs a fifth of a gram. Do not confuse it with the karat that measures gold purity, which is a different thing spelled differently.
The troy ounce is the one that catches people out. Gold, silver, and other precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, and a troy ounce is heavier than the ounce you weigh food in. A troy ounce is about 31.10 grams, while the everyday avoirdupois ounce is about 28.35 grams. So a "gold ounce" is a little more metal than a kitchen ounce, which matters a lot when you are pricing it.
The tola is the traditional unit for gold across South Asia, including Nepal, India, and Pakistan. One tola is about 11.66 grams, and jewellers in the region still quote prices in tolas, so this is the unit to reach for when a gold rate is given that way.
