Cooking measures, and why US and metric cups differ
In this tool, the cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, fluid ounce, pint, quart, and gallon are all US customary measures, and that matters in the kitchen, because the same word can mean different amounts in different countries. A US cup is about 237 millilitres, but a metric cup, used across much of the world, is 250 millilitres. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while a UK gallon is larger at 4.546 litres. Even the pint splits: 473 millilitres in the US, 568 in the UK. So when a recipe calls for a cup or a pint, it helps to know which side of the Atlantic it came from.
Within the US system, the steps are tidy: 3 teaspoons make a tablespoon, 16 tablespoons make a cup, and 16 cups make a gallon. And one small mercy that holds everywhere: a millilitre and a cubic centimetre are exactly the same, so 1 mL is 1 cc.
