What this converter does

Sound and signal levels are written in decibels, and now and then in bels or nepers, three logarithmic units describing the same kind of ratio. This converter moves a value between the three, a common need in acoustics and electronics where the same level can be quoted any of the ways.

How it works

The decibel is the base here, and the other two units convert to it by a fixed factor: a bel is 10 decibels, and a neper is about 8.686 decibels. So the tool converts your value into decibels and then back out to the unit you want. The factors are fixed because all three are just different ways of writing the same kind of logarithmic ratio.

What a decibel really is

The three units here, the bel, the decibel, and the neper, are all logarithmic, which is what makes them powerful and a little confusing. Instead of measuring an amount directly, they measure a ratio between two values, and they do it on a log scale so that enormous and tiny ratios fit into small, manageable numbers.

The bel, named after Alexander Graham Bell, is the parent unit, but it is almost never used on its own. In practice everyone uses the decibel, which is simply one-tenth of a bel, so 1 bel is 10 dB. The handy rule for power is that every 10 dB is a tenfold change, and every 3 dB is roughly a doubling. So +20 dB means 100 times the power, and -3 dB means about half.

The neper is the same idea built on the natural logarithm (base e) rather than base 10, and it turns up in electronics and control engineering. One neper is about 8.686 decibels. This tool converts straight between all three.

You have most likely met the decibel as a measure of loudness, where a sound level is quoted against a fixed reference. That is one common use, but the decibel itself is a general ratio measure, used everywhere from signal gain to acoustics.

How many decibels are in a bel?

Ten. The decibel is defined as one-tenth of a bel, which is why the decibel, not the bel, is the unit you usually see.

What is a neper?

It is a logarithmic ratio unit like the decibel, but based on the natural logarithm instead of base 10. One neper is about 8.686 decibels, and it is used mainly in electronics and engineering.

Why are decibels logarithmic?

Because the quantities they describe span a huge range. A log scale compresses that range into small numbers, and it turns big multiplications into simple additions. Every 10 dB step is a tenfold change in power.

Does +3 dB mean twice as loud?

It means about double the power, not necessarily double the perceived loudness, which is a separate matter of how ears respond. As a rule, +3 dB is roughly twice the power and +10 dB is ten times.

Who is the decibel named after?

Alexander Graham Bell. The bel carries his name, and the decibel is one-tenth of it. The neper, by contrast, is named after John Napier, who introduced logarithms.
