What this converter does

How far is it? On one side of the world that gets answered in kilometres, on the other in miles, and this converter turns the figure from one into the other. It reaches from nanometres up to kilometres and miles, so it covers a microscopic gap or a cross-country drive.

How to use it

  • Type your distance into the value box.
  • Set From to the unit you have, and To to the unit you want. It opens on kilometres to metres.
  • Press Calculate.

The result reads back in plain words, like "5 km is equal to 3.10686 mi." Use Swap to flip the two units, and Reset to clear.

How it works

Behind the scenes the metre is the common reference. Your value is converted to metres and then to the target unit, using the agreed factors, with a mile defined as 1,609.344 metres and a kilometre as 1,000. Displayed results are rounded to nine significant figures.

Distance or Length: which one you need

This tool includes kilometres and miles because it is built for how far apart things are: the gap between two cities, the length of a route, the gauge of a run or a drive. That is where the big units earn their keep.

If instead you are measuring the size of an object, how tall, wide, or long something is, you rarely need miles, and the Length Converter keeps it to metres, centimetres, inches, and the rest. Same maths underneath. So: Distance for how far away, Length for how big.

Questions people ask

How many kilometres are in a mile?

A mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Going the other way, a kilometre is about 0.621 miles.

How far is a 5K in miles?

About 3.11 miles. A 10K is about 6.21 miles, since each kilometre is roughly 0.62 of a mile.

What is a quick way to convert kilometres to miles?

Multiply kilometres by about 0.62, or for a rough head estimate, take roughly two-thirds. So 100 km is around 62 miles.

Why does this have miles and kilometres when the Length converter does not?

Because distance is about how far apart things are, where big units like miles and kilometres matter. Length is about the size of an object, which rarely needs them, so the two tools cover different ranges on purpose.

How many feet are in a metre?

About 3.28 feet. A metre is a touch longer than a yard, which is exactly 3 feet.
