What the running pace calculator does
Every runner ends up asking the same question sooner or later: how fast am I actually going? This tool answers it. You give it a distance and the time it took, and it tells you your pace, the minutes it takes you to cover each kilometer or mile, along with your speed. It works the other way too, so if you have a goal pace in mind you can see how long a run will take, or how far you would get in a set time.
It also does something more useful than a plain pace sum. Once it knows the pace you can hold, it can estimate your finishing time for a different race distance, which is the part most runners really want when they are eyeing their next start line.
How to use it
There are two parts to it. The top part is the pace solver, and the bottom part predicts a race time.
- Fill in any two of the four boxes. Distance, Time, Pace, and Speed are all linked, so the moment you enter two of them, the calculator fills in the rest. Enter your distance and time to get your pace and speed, or type a pace you want to hold and a distance to see the time it would take.
- Pick the units that suit you. Distance in meters, kilometers, yards, or miles. Time in seconds, minutes, or hours. Pace in minutes per kilometer, minutes per mile, and several others. Speed in km/h or mph. Change a unit after you have a result and it converts on the spot.
- For a race estimate, use the lower section. Pick a target race distance, or type your own, and it gives you a predicted finishing time and the pace that goes with it, based on the pace you entered above.
It updates as you type, so there is no calculate button to press. The Reset button clears everything when you want to start fresh.
How your pace is worked out
Pace is just your time spread over your distance. In one line:
Pace = time ÷ distance
So if you cover 5 km in 25 minutes, your pace is 25 divided by 5, which is 5 minutes per kilometer. Speed is the same two numbers the other way around, distance divided by time, which is why the calculator can show you both from a single run. The only thing it does behind the scenes is line up the units, so you are free to enter your distance in miles and read your pace in minutes per kilometer if that is what your watch and your race happen to use.
An example with real numbers
Say you run 10 km and it takes you 50 minutes.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5 minutes per kilometer, written 5:00 min/km
- Speed = 10 km in 50 minutes is 12 km/h
- In the other system that is about 8:03 per mile, or roughly 7.5 mph
So one 50 minute run gives you the same effort described four ways. That is handy when your training plan is written in one unit, your watch shows another, and the race you signed up for uses a third.
Pace and speed are the same thing backwards
People mix these two up constantly, and the reason is that they run in opposite directions. Pace is time per distance, so a smaller number is faster. A 4:30 min/km runner is quicker than a 5:00 min/km runner. Speed is distance per time, so a bigger number is faster. 14 km/h beats 12 km/h.
They describe exactly the same effort, just from two ends. This trips people up most often on a treadmill, which usually shows speed in km/h or mph, while almost every runner thinks and trains in pace. Enter the treadmill's speed here and you get your pace straight away, no mental gymnastics required.
Reading pace the way runners write it
One quick thing that saves confusion. Pace is written in minutes and seconds, not as a decimal. A pace of 5:30 per kilometer means five minutes and thirty seconds for each kilometer. It does not mean five and a half minutes, which would be 5:30 only by accident. The difference matters when you do the sums: 5:30 per km over 10 km is 55 minutes, because thirty seconds times ten is five extra minutes on top of the fifty. So when you read a pace, treat the part after the colon as seconds out of sixty, the same as a clock, and your finishing times will always add up.
The race time predictor, and the formula behind it
This is the clever part. Tell the calculator a distance and time you have run, point it at a different race distance, and it predicts how fast you could run that one. It does this with a well known piece of running science called Riegel's formula, named after Peter Riegel, who published it in 1981 after studying world record performances. It says:
Predicted time = your time × (new distance ÷ old distance)1.06
The interesting bit is that little exponent, 1.06. If your time simply scaled with distance, doubling the distance would double the time. Riegel found it climbs a touch faster than that, because the longer you run, the more fatigue costs you. Double the distance and the time goes up by a factor of about 2.09, not 2. So a 25 minute 5 km does not predict a 50 minute 10 km, it predicts closer to 52 minutes. That small extra is the price of endurance, and the formula bakes it in.
It is a genuinely good estimate, but it works best between races of fairly similar length, say from a mile up to a half marathon, and it assumes you have trained for the longer distance. Stretch it across a big gap, like predicting a marathon off a single 5 km, and it tends to read optimistic, because real marathons punish anyone who has not put in the long miles. Treat the prediction as a smart target to train toward, not a promise.
Pacing the race itself
Knowing the pace is one thing, holding it is another, and the most common race day mistake is going out too fast. A pace that feels easy in the first kilometer, when you are fresh and excited, can be the very thing that wrecks the last few. For most distances from 5 km up, the smart play is an even pace, or a slight negative split, meaning you run the second half a hair faster than the first. Start controlled, settle in, and have something left to spend at the end.
One more honest note. The pace this gives you is for fair conditions. Heat, a stiff headwind, and a hilly course all slow you down for the same effort, so on a tough day, give yourself a few seconds per kilometer of grace rather than chasing the number into the ground.

How do I calculate my running pace?

What is the difference between pace and speed?

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometer?
A mile is longer than a kilometer, so your per mile pace is the bigger number. To go from per kilometer to per mile, multiply by about 1.609. The calculator switches between them for you if you just change the unit.
How accurate is the race time prediction?
It is a solid estimate for races of similar length when you have trained for the distance, often within a few percent. It gets less reliable across big jumps in distance, such as guessing a marathon from a short race, where it tends to be optimistic. Use it as a training target, not a guarantee.
What is a good running pace?
It depends entirely on the runner and the distance, so there is no single right answer. The honest way to use this tool is to measure your own pace, then watch it improve over the same distance as your training builds. That is a far better gauge of progress than comparing yourself to anyone else.
