What the marathon pace calculator does
You have a goal time in your head, a sub-4 marathon, maybe, or a sub-2 half, and the real question is what pace that actually asks of you. This tool answers it. You set the race distance, it is already on the marathon, type your goal finish time, and it gives you the pace you need to hold, in minutes per kilometer or per mile, along with the matching speed.
It runs the other way too. Put in a pace you know you can hold and it tells you the finishing time that comes out of it. And although it opens on the full marathon, the event menu covers the half, the 5k, the 10k, and the other common distances, so the same tool plans any of them.
How to use it
- Pick your event. It starts on the marathon. Choose the half, 5k, 10k, or another distance if that is your race, and the distance fills in for you.
- Enter your goal time. Type the finishing time you are aiming for, and read off the pace it requires.
- Or work backward. Distance, time, pace, and speed are all linked, so you can enter a pace instead and see the finish time it would give you.
It updates as you type, and the Reset button clears the form.
How the pace is worked out
Pace is your time spread evenly over the distance:
Pace = goal time ÷ race distance
A marathon is 42.195 km, or 26.219 miles, so a four hour goal is 240 minutes divided by 42.195, which lands at about 5:41 per kilometer. That is the steady pace that, held the whole way, brings you home in exactly four hours. The catch, of course, is the word steady, which is what the rest of this page is about.

Notice how tight the gaps are. The difference between a 4:00 and a 4:30 marathon is about forty seconds a kilometer, which does not sound like much until you have to hold it for forty-two of them. That is exactly why a sensible goal is one you have trained for, not one that looks nice and round.
The wall, and why even pacing wins
The marathon has a famous trap called the wall, and it usually shows up somewhere around 30 km, or 18 to 20 miles. Your body stores only so much easy fuel, the glycogen in your muscles, and a marathon is long enough to run the tank low. When it does, your pace falls off a cliff and the last few kilometers turn into a grind.
Here is the cruel part. Going out too fast is the surest way to hit the wall early, because a quicker pace burns through that fuel faster. The runners who fade in the final stretch are almost always the ones who banked time in the first half. So the discipline is to run an even pace, or even a hair slower in the first half than the second, which runners call a negative split. Use the pace this tool gives you as your ceiling for the early miles, not a target to beat, and you give yourself the best shot at holding it all the way to the line.
An example with real numbers
Say you are chasing a four hour marathon.
- Goal time = 4 hours = 240 minutes
- Pace = 240 ÷ 42.195 km = about 5:41 per kilometer
- In miles that is 240 ÷ 26.219 = about 9:09 per mile
So 5:41 per kilometer is the number to lock into. Run the early kilometers a touch slower than that if anything, settle into it through the middle, and you have left yourself somewhere to go when the back end of the race starts asking hard questions.
Questions people ask
What pace do I need for a sub 4 hour marathon?
About 5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile, held the whole way. A sub 3:30 needs roughly 4:59 per kilometer, and a sub 3:00 about 4:16 per kilometer.
Does it only do the marathon?
No. It opens on the marathon because that is what most people come for, but the event menu includes the half marathon, 5k, 10k, and other distances, so it works for any race you are pacing.
Should I run an even pace the whole way?
For most runners, yes, or slightly faster in the second half than the first. Going out too fast burns your easy fuel early and brings on the wall, so treat the calculated pace as a ceiling for the opening miles rather than a target.
How do I know if my goal time is realistic?
The honest test is your training. A goal pace you have practised on long runs is one you can probably hold. If the required pace is far quicker than anything you have sustained in training, it is worth setting a kinder goal and chasing the fast one another day.
