What the swim time converter does
A swim time only means something next to the pool it was swum in, and the same swimmer posts different times in a 25-yard pool, a 25-meter pool, and a 50-meter pool. This tool translates between them. You give it your stroke, distance, time, and the two courses you are converting between, and it estimates the equivalent time in the other course.
It is what lets you compare a time from your local yards pool against a meters standard, or see roughly what your short course time is worth in the long course pool that championships are swum in.

The three pool courses
Competitive swimming uses three standard pool lengths, and the abbreviations are worth knowing:
- SCY, short course yards, a 25-yard pool. The standard for high school and college swimming in the United States.
- SCM, short course meters, a 25-meter pool. Common in international short course competition and many club programs.
- LCM, long course meters, a 50-meter pool. The Olympic standard and the format for major summer championships.
Why times differ between courses
Two separate things make the same race faster or slower depending on the pool. The first is simple distance: a meter is a little longer than a yard, so 100 meters is a bit further than 100 yards, which is part of why meter times read slower. The second, and the bigger one, is turns. Every time you reach a wall you push off, and a push-off is faster than swimming, so it is a little burst of free speed. A 25-meter pool gives you more walls than a 50-meter pool over the same distance, which means more push-offs and faster times. That is why short course times are almost always quicker than long course, and why the 50-meter pool, with the fewest turns, is often called the truest test of pure swimming speed.
How the conversion works
The conversion combines those two effects. The difference between yards and meters is handled by a factor of about 1.11, which folds in both the distance change and its small effect on your pace. On top of that, an adjustment is added or subtracted for the difference in turns between the two pools. That turn adjustment is not a single number, because it depends on your stroke and your distance. Butterfly and backstroke gain the most from turns, thanks to their powerful underwater kicks, while breaststroke gains the least, because the rules limit how far you can travel underwater. And longer races mean more turns, so the adjustment grows with distance. This is exactly why the tool asks for your stroke and distance rather than just multiplying by a fixed number.
An example with real numbers
Say you swam a 100 freestyle in 50.00 seconds in a short course yards pool.
- To short course meters: 50.00 × 1.11 = about 55.5 seconds
- To long course meters: 50.00 × 1.11, plus a turn adjustment of roughly 1.4 seconds, gives about 56.9 seconds
So your yards time of 50 seconds is worth a little under 57 seconds in the Olympic-size pool, the gap reflecting both the longer distance and the lost push-offs.
These are estimates
It is worth being clear that these conversions are estimates, built on factors published by USA Swimming and drawn from large amounts of real race data. They describe the average swimmer well, which makes them genuinely useful for setting goals, comparing performances, and judging meet standards. But you are not the average swimmer, and your own result can differ. A swimmer with exceptional turns and underwater work gains more from short course than the formula assumes, while someone weaker off the walls gains less, and things like altitude and pool conditions nudge real times too. Treat the converted time as a well-grounded estimate to aim at, not a guaranteed result.
