What the erg calculator does

An erg, short for ergometer, is the indoor rowing machine, and its workouts revolve around four numbers: the distance rowed, the total time, the 500-meter split, and the power in watts. This tool ties them together. You enter any three of those four, and it works out the fourth, so you can plan a piece, check a pace, or compare efforts without doing the algebra mid-row.

It is the rowing equivalent of a pace calculator, with one extra twist that makes rowing distinctive: power and pace are linked by a steep mathematical curve, which is the most interesting thing on this page.

The 500m split, rowing's pace unit

If you are new to the erg, the split is the number to understand first. The 500-meter split is the time it would take to row 500 meters at your current pace, and it is the standard measure of speed in rowing, shown on every machine's monitor. A lower split means you are rowing faster. It connects to distance and time in the simple way you would expect: your split is your total time divided by how many 500-meter chunks you covered.

500m split = total time ÷ (distance ÷ 500)

So rowing 2,000 meters in 8 minutes is four 500-meter chunks in 480 seconds, which is a 120-second, or 2:00, split. Distance, time, and split all move together by plain arithmetic. Watts are where it gets more interesting.

How watts relate to pace: the cube law

Power on the erg follows a fixed formula set by the machine's maker, and it is not a straight line. Watts rise with the cube of your speed:

Watts = 2.80 ÷ (split in seconds ÷ 500)3

That little cube changes everything. Because power depends on the cube of pace, going a bit faster costs a lot more power. To row twice as fast, halving your split, you would have to produce eight times the power, since two cubed is eight. This is why the erg can feel so unforgiving: the gap between a 2:00 split and a 1:50 split looks like a casual ten seconds, but it is the difference between roughly 200 and 260 watts, a near thirty percent jump in output that takes serious work to bridge.

An example with real numbers

Say you row 2,000 meters in 7 minutes, which is 420 seconds.

  • Split = 420 ÷ (2000 ÷ 500) = 420 ÷ 4 = 105 seconds, which is a 1:45 split
  • Watts = 2.80 ÷ (105 ÷ 500)3 = 2.80 ÷ 0.213 ≈ 302 watts

So a 7-minute 2k means holding a 1:45 split and putting out about 302 watts. Shave that 2k down even slightly and watch how quickly the watts climb, which is the cube law in action.

Why the cube law matters for training

The cube relationship is not just a curiosity, it is a useful reality check. It explains why erg progress is so hard-won: small improvements in your split demand disproportionately large gains in power and fitness, so dropping from 1:50 to 1:40 is far tougher than going from 2:00 to 1:50, even though both are ten seconds. It also makes the split an honest measure of training. Effort can lie, and heart rate drifts with heat and fatigue, but the split is direct and repeatable, tied straight to the work you are doing. Tracking it session to session shows you real progress that you can trust, and the watts figure tells you exactly how much power that progress is costing.

What is a 500m split on a rowing machine?

It is the time it would take to row 500 meters at your current pace, the standard measure of rowing speed shown on the monitor. A lower split means faster rowing.

How are watts calculated on an erg?

With the machine's fixed formula, watts equal 2.80 divided by the cube of your pace in seconds per meter. Because of the cube, power rises steeply as your pace gets faster.

Why does a small pace gain need so much more power?
