What this does

So you have got a new pet and it is not a cat or a dog, or you just want a wider net of ideas. This is the general one. Tap Generate for a random pet name, set a number for a whole batch, and use the filters if you have a letter or a sound in mind. The list leans fun and full of character, so it suits everything from a rabbit to a rat to a reptile.

How to use it

  1. Set Number / Quantity for how many names you want, from 1 to 100.
  2. Tap Generate, and Copy the ones that fit.
  3. Narrow the list with the Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes.

Generate away until one suits your new companion.

How it works

The tool holds a built in list of pet names, and your browser's random generator, Math.random, picks from it. Add a filter and it narrows the list to matching names before picking. It all runs on your device, and Copy saves your picks. Honest note as always, Math.random is pseudo random, which is perfectly fine for gathering name ideas.

Tips for naming any pet

The nice thing about a small pet is that the name is purely for your enjoyment, since a hamster or a goldfish is not going to learn it. So have fun with it. A couple of pointers still help. Match the name to the animal a little, a tiny bold name on a tiny bold creature is always good, and a grand name on something small is a classic joke that never gets old. Keep it easy to say, because you will say it more than you expect. And spare a thought for the vet's waiting room, where you will one day have to call the name out in front of strangers, so pick one you can say with a straight face. Or do not, half the fun is a daft name.

What people use it for

Any new pet, really, especially the ones the cat and dog generators do not cover, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, and fish. People also use it to name pets in stories and games, and to gather a shortlist of ideas to argue over with the family. Watching the names roll by is a good way to land on the one you did not know you were looking for.

Questions people ask

Does it work for pets other than cats and dogs?

Yes, that is the idea. The list is a general mix that suits rabbits, hamsters, birds, reptiles, fish, and just about any small pet.

How many names can I get at once?

Up to 100. Set the number, tap Generate, and Copy the batch.

Can I narrow the names down?

Yes. Use the Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes to focus on names with a certain letter or sound.

Are the names random?

Yes. Each pick is drawn at random, so every Generate gives you a fresh set.
