What this does

So you want to picture a bird's age in human terms, or your own age as a bird. This does that. Pick a bird species, enter a human age, and it gives you the equivalent age for that bird. It works by comparing how far through life each one is, which is a nicer way to think about it than a flat conversion.

How to use it

1. Pick the bird species from the list.
2. Enter a human age, and leave the human life expectancy as it is unless you want to change it. The default is the world average.
3. Tap Calculate to see the equivalent bird age.

The default human life expectancy is set to 72.6 years, which you can adjust if you like.

How it works

The idea is simple and rather neat. Instead of multiplying by a fixed number, it works out how far through life a human of that age is, then maps that same fraction onto the bird's typical lifespan. So a person halfway through their expected life lines up with a bird halfway through its own. The sum is:

bird age = human age × bird lifespan ÷ human lifespan

For example, a 36 year old person, against a 72.6 year human life expectancy, is about halfway through, so for a cockatiel that lives around 20 years, that comes out near 10 years. It all runs on your device. Because it leans on average lifespans, treat it as a fun, rough comparison rather than a precise figure, since a bird's real lifespan depends a lot on species, diet, and care.

The lifespans it uses

To be open about the numbers, here are the average lifespans the tool uses for each species. Real birds vary widely, and good care can push these higher, but these are sensible middle values to work from: parakeet or budgie around 8 years, cockatiel around 20, lovebird around 15, zebra finch around 6, canary around 10, African grey parrot around 45, and conure around 15. The Others option uses 15 years as a general stand in.
