- Use the Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes to narrow the list.
Keep generating to keep meeting new ones.
How it works
Behind the tool is a built in list of cat breeds, and your browser's random generator, Math.random, picks from it. Set a filter and it narrows the list to matching breeds before picking. It runs entirely on your device, and Copy saves your picks. Honest note as ever, Math.random is pseudo random, which is all a breed picker needs.
How many cat breeds are there
Far fewer than dogs, which surprises people. Where dog breeds run into the hundreds, recognised cat breeds number only a few dozen, depending on which registry you ask. The reason is history. Dogs were bred hard for thousands of years to do particular jobs, while cats largely did one job, keeping pests down, and were mostly left to their own devices. Deliberate cat breeding for looks is a much more recent hobby, so many of the breeds you will see here, like the Bengal or the Ragdoll, are relatively young. That also means there is far less variation in size and shape between cat breeds than between dog breeds.
What people use it for
Cat breed quizzes and games are the obvious use, where you want a random breed to identify or draw. People also use it when they are considering a cat and want to learn what is out there before settling on one to research. Writers and artists use it for ideas, and lots just generate breeds to discover ones they had never come across.
Questions people ask
Why are there fewer cat breeds than dog breeds?
Cats were bred far less intensively than dogs, which were shaped over thousands of years for specific jobs. Deliberate cat breeding is mostly recent, so there are only a few dozen recognised breeds.
Can I narrow the breeds down?
Yes. The Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes let you focus on breeds with a certain letter or word.
Can I use it for a quiz?
Yes. Generate a batch of random breeds and use them as quiz or game prompts.
Are the breeds random?
Yes. Each pick is drawn at random from the list, so generating again gives you a fresh set.
