What this does
So your cat has somehow eaten chocolate and you want to know how serious it is. This estimates the dose of the harmful compounds your cat took in, from the amount eaten, the type, and your cat's weight, and shows where that falls against known risk levels. Cats rarely seek out chocolate, since they cannot taste sweetness, but it is just as toxic to them as to dogs.

How it works
Chocolate is toxic because of two stimulants in cocoa, theobromine and caffeine, together called methylxanthines, which cats and dogs clear only slowly. The calculator works out the total methylxanthines from the amount and type, then divides by your cat's weight to get a dose per kilogram:
dose (mg/kg) = amount eaten (g) × (theobromine + caffeine per g) ÷ weight in kg
The type makes a big difference, since darker and more bitter chocolate carries far more theobromine than milk chocolate, and white chocolate has almost none. Because cats are small, even a modest amount of a dark product can add up quickly.
The risk levels
The thresholds used for the methylxanthine dose are roughly the same broad picture as for dogs. Mild signs such as vomiting and restlessness can begin around 20 mg per kilogram, effects on the heart around 40 to 50, and seizures around 60 and above. The caveat is the same and matters just as much, these are guides, not guarantees, and individual animals vary, so some react at lower doses, and any existing health problem raises the risk. Treat the calculator as a triage aid for your vet, not a reason to wait at home. Signs may take several hours to appear and can last a day or more.
