What this does
So you want to know how old your cat is in human terms. This tells you. Enter your cat's age in years, tap Calculate, and it gives you the rough human equivalent. And no, it is not seven years per year, that old rule is a myth. It uses the method vets actually use, which counts those fast early years more heavily.

How it works
Cats grow up fast and then settle down, so the maths is not a flat multiplier. Vets use what is often called the 15-9-4 rule, agreed by feline health groups including International Cat Care. The first year of a cat's life counts as about 15 human years. The second year adds 9 more, bringing the total to 24. After that, each cat year is worth about 4 human years. So for a cat older than two, the sum is:
human age = (cat age - 2) × 4 + 24
A 5 year old cat, for example, works out at (5 - 2) × 4 + 24, which is 36 human years. The calculation runs entirely on your device.

Why your cat's age matters
Knowing the rough human age helps you picture your cat's life stage and care for them accordingly. Cats are often considered senior from around 10 or 11, the point at which vets tend to suggest more regular check ups and a closer eye on weight, teeth, and kidneys. As always, the chart is a rough guide, and your vet, who can actually examine your cat, is the best judge of their real age and health, which is especially handy for a rescue whose birthday you do not know.

Is the seven years per year rule true?
No, it is a myth. Cats age fast early on, with the first year alone worth about 15 human years, then settle to roughly four human years for each cat year.
Does breed change the result?
Not much. Unlike dogs, cats are all a fairly similar size, so the same rule works well across breeds.
When is a cat a senior?
Often around 10 to 11 years, which works out to roughly the late fifties in human terms.
How do I find my rescue cat's age?
A vet can estimate it from the teeth, eyes, and coat. Once you have a rough age, use the chart from there.
