What this tool does
Sometimes you do not have a colour in mind as a code; you want to find it by eye. You want to move around a space of colours, see them change as you go, and stop when one looks right. Typing values and guessing is the wrong way round for that, since you cannot picture a colour from its numbers before you see it.
That is what this does. It gives you an interactive picker you drag to choose a colour visually, and as you move it shows the colour you have landed on along with its codes, ready to copy. It lets you hunt for a colour the natural way, by looking, and then hands you the exact values once you have found the one you want.
How to use it
- Move the picker. Drag through the colour area and the hue control to choose a colour by eye.

How it works
The picker is an interactive control built with colorjoe. As you drag its handles, it reads where they sit and works out the colour that position stands for, then updates the swatch and the codes in real time. Everything you see follows your movement instantly, so choosing feels direct.
Under the surface it is translating a position into a colour and that colour into numbers. Where your handle sits in the colour area and where the hue control points together define one exact colour, which the tool then writes out in the usual formats. So the visual act of dragging and the precise codes you copy are two views of the same thing, kept in step as you pick.
What a colour picker is
A colour picker is the standard visual way to choose a colour, the same kind of control you meet inside design software and image editors. It usually has two parts: a large area where you drag to set how vivid and how bright the colour is, and a separate strip or ring for choosing the hue, the basic colour itself.
The reason it is split this way is that it matches how people look for a colour. You pick the family first, red, green, blue, or wherever on the wheel, then refine within that family, making the colour stronger or softer, lighter or darker, by moving through the area. That two-step layout is why a picker feels so natural: it separates the big choice of hue from the fine tuning of the exact shade.
The codes it gives you
Finding a colour by eye is only half the job; you also need it in a form you can use, and that is what the codes are for. As you pick, the tool shows the selected colour written out in the common formats, so you can copy it as a hex code for the web, as RGB values for code, or as HSL if you plan to adjust it further.

Picking a colour well
A picker rewards a simple order of operations. Set the hue first, using the strip or ring, so you are in the right colour family before you fuss over the details. Trying to get the exact shade before you have the hue right is a common way to go in circles, since moving the hue afterwards shifts everything anyway.
Once the hue is set, use the main area to place the colour: moving one way makes it more or less vivid, the other way makes it lighter or darker. Keep an eye on how the colour looks against the background it will actually sit on, not just against the picker, since a colour can read quite differently in place. Pick the hue, refine the shade, and check it in context, and you will land on a colour that works rather than just one that looked good in isolation.
