How this adverb generator works

You need an adverb, or several. Maybe you are tightening up a piece of writing, teaching how adverbs work, or just after a word for how something is done. This tool gives you one in a tap. Below is how it works, plus the part of adverbs that trips almost everyone up.

It runs on a hand-checked list of over three hundred adverbs, cleaned by hand. Most of them end in -ly, which is the pattern people picture when they think "adverb", quickly, quietly, badly. But as you will see further down, that is not the whole story.

What an adverb does

An adverb modifies, which is a roundabout way of saying it adds detail. Most people learn that adverbs describe verbs, and they do: "she sang badly" tells you how she sang. But adverbs do more than that. They also modify adjectives ("very tall"), other adverbs ("quite quickly"), and sometimes a whole sentence ("honestly, I forgot"). So an adverb is less about one fixed job and more about turning up the detail wherever a sentence needs it.

The kinds of adverbs

The easiest way to sort adverbs is by the question they answer:

• Manner, answering how. quickly, carefully, badly. She drove carefully.
• Time, answering when. yesterday, soon, now, later. We leave soon.
• Place, answering where. here, outside, everywhere. Look outside.
• Frequency, answering how often. always, never, sometimes, weekly. He is always late.
• Degree, answering how much. very, quite, almost, completely. It is almost done.

Most of the words on this list are adverbs of manner, the -ly kind, since those are the ones people reach for most when writing.

The -ly rule, and where it breaks

Here is where the tidy "-ly means adverb" idea falls apart, and it is worth knowing so you are not caught out.

First, plenty of adverbs do not end in -ly at all. Fast is an adverb: you run fast, not "fastly". So are hard, well, straight, late, and time words like daily and weekly. Well is the sneaky one, it is the adverb form of "good". You do something well, not "goodly".

Second, and this is the one that catches people, some words that end in -ly are not adverbs. Friendly, lovely, lonely, silly, ugly, these are all adjectives. And because they already end in -ly, you cannot neatly turn them into adverbs. There is no "friendlily" or "sillily". English just reworks the sentence instead: "she said it in a friendly way", not "she said it friendlily".

So -ly is a strong hint, not a rule. The real test is what the word is doing in the sentence, not how it ends.

Where adverbs sit in a sentence

Adverbs are unusually free about where they sit, which is part of what makes them useful for style. "Quietly she left", "she quietly left", and "she left quietly" are all fine, and each puts the weight in a slightly different place. Adverbs of frequency usually go before the main verb though, as in "I always walk", and "always" goes after "be", as in "I am always late". A small thing, but it is the kind of detail that makes a sentence sound native.

Ways people use random adverbs

• Sharpening writing. This one cuts both ways. A precise adverb can help, but piling them on is a classic weak-writing habit. Generating a few and asking whether the verb alone would be stronger is good editing practice.
• Verb and adverb pairing. Pull an adverb and find the verb it fits best. Good for learners building natural combinations.
• Teaching. Quick material for sorting adverbs by type, or spotting them in a sentence.

Getting more from the filters

• To drill the -ly spelling changes (easy becomes easily, careful becomes carefully), generate a batch and check how each one was formed.

Questions people ask

Do all adverbs end in -ly?

No. Many do (quickly, slowly), but plenty do not: fast, well, hard, late, daily. And some -ly words are actually adjectives, like friendly and lovely.

Is "well" an adverb?

Yes, it is the adverb form of "good". "She sings well", not "she sings good". "Well" can also be an adjective when it means healthy, as in "I feel well".

Can an adverb describe an adjective?

Yes. In "very tall" or "really cold", the adverb (very, really) is modifying the adjective. Adverbs are not limited to verbs.

What is a conjunctive adverb?

A word like however, therefore, or meanwhile that links two ideas across sentences. It does an adverb's job and a connector's job at the same time.
