How this hangman word generator works

You need a word for hangman, or a batch of them. The game only works if the guesser has no idea what the word is, so having someone else, or something else, pick it keeps it honest. This tool gives you a word in a tap, and the page below covers how to play and how to choose a word that is genuinely hard to crack.

It runs on a hand-checked list of around 850 English words, ranging from short and easy to longer and trickier. Press Generate for one, or set the Number box from 1 to 100 for a batch with no repeats. Each word comes back with a capital letter.

The handiest filter is Contains: type a few letters to pull words that include them. The Copy button lifts the whole list at once.

How to play hangman

One player picks a secret word and draws a short dash for each of its letters. The other players guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word, it gets filled into every blank where it belongs. If it is not, the picker draws one part of the stick figure on the gallows: head, body, two arms, two legs.

It is a race between the word and the drawing. The guessers win if they complete the word before the figure is finished, usually after six wrong guesses. The picker wins if the drawing is done first. Simple to set up, and it needs nothing but paper and a pen.

What makes a tricky word

Here is the bit most people get wrong: length alone does not make a word hard. A long word with common letters can be easier than a short one with rare letters. What actually makes a word tough to guess:

• Uncommon letters. Words with J, Q, X, Z, or K are hard because guessers rarely try those letters early. "Jazz" is a brutal little word.
• Few repeated common letters. If a word leans on rare letters instead of the usual E, A, and T, the blanks stay empty for longer.
• Unusual patterns. Words like "rhythm" or "lynx", light on vowels, throw guessers off completely.

So when you pick, reach for the odd, spiky words rather than the longest ones.

A quick word on guessing strategy

If you are the one guessing, the smart opening is to play the odds. Some letters appear far more often than others in English, so start with the common ones. E is the most frequent letter by a wide margin, followed by T, A, O, and the other vowels. Guessing those first tends to fill in blanks fast and shows you the shape of the word. Save the rare letters for when you have a hunch. It is the same logic that makes E and A worth a single point in Scrabble while Q and Z are worth ten.

• Use the Contains box to pull words with a tricky pattern in them, like something with "x" or "z".

• If Contains returns nothing, no word in the list holds that string. Try a shorter one.
