What the ETA calculator does

A drive time tells you how many hours you will be on the road. This tool answers the question people actually ask, which is what time will I get there. You give it the distance, the speed you expect to average, the time you are leaving, and the stops you plan to make, and it gives you back an actual arrival date and time.

The departure time and the stops are what set it apart from a plain drive time calculation. It turns a duration into a point on the clock you can plan around, and tell the people waiting for you.

How to use it

  1. Unit System. Imperial or metric, which sets the distance and speed units.
  2. Total Distance to Drive. The full distance of the trip.
  3. Avg Vehicle Speed. The speed you realistically expect to average over the whole route, not the top speed.
  4. Departure Date and Time. When you are setting off.
  5. Number of Scheduled Stops, and Avg Time at Each Stop. How many times you plan to stop, and how long each one takes, in hours and minutes.

How your arrival time is worked out

It builds the answer in three pieces. First the driving time, which is the distance divided by your average speed. Then the stop time, which is the number of stops multiplied by how long each one takes. Add those together for the total time the trip will swallow:

Total travel time = driving time + (number of stops × time per stop)

Then it adds that total to your departure time to land on the arrival date and time. The reason it asks for a full date and time, not just a clock time, is so a long trip that runs past midnight still gives you the right day on the other end.

An example with real numbers

Say you are driving 600 miles, expecting to average 60 mph, leaving at 8:00 AM, with 3 stops of 30 minutes each.

  • Driving time = 600 ÷ 60 = 10 hours
  • Stop time = 3 × 30 minutes = 90 minutes, which is 1.5 hours
  • Total travel time = 10 + 1.5 = 11.5 hours
  • Arrival = 8:00 AM plus 11.5 hours = 7:30 PM the same day

Look at what the stops did. The driving alone would have you there by 6:00 PM, but the three half-hour breaks pushed arrival to 7:30. That hour and a half is exactly the part most people leave out when they guess in their head.

The stops everyone forgets

When you work out an arrival time in your head, you almost always picture the driving and quietly skip the stops. On a long day that is where the estimate falls apart. A fuel stop, a sit-down lunch, and a couple of quick breaks can easily add up to an hour or more, and that hour is the difference between arriving in daylight and arriving after dark. This calculator makes you put the stops in on purpose, which is the whole point. An arrival time that includes your real breaks is one you can actually promise someone.

The speed comparison table, and why it helps

Along with your arrival time, the tool prints a small table showing what would happen at a range of average speeds, from a fair bit slower than your figure to a fair bit faster, with the drive time and arrival time for each. It is worth a look, because it shows something people underestimate: how little time you actually claw back by driving faster. Once a trip includes stops, pushing your average speed up often shaves off less than you would hope, while the risk and the fuel use climb. Seeing the rows side by side makes the trade-off honest, and usually makes a calmer pace look like the sensible choice.

Questions people ask

How is this different from a drive time calculator?

A drive time calculator gives you a duration, how many hours the driving takes. This one adds your departure time and your stops and gives you an actual arrival date and time on the clock.

Does it account for stops?

Yes, and that is the main reason to use it. You tell it how many stops you will make and how long each takes, and it folds that into the arrival time, which is the bit head-math usually misses.

What speed should I put for the average?

The speed you expect across the whole route, not the limit on the fastest stretch. A trip mixing highway and town driving averages lower than the highway figure, so be realistic or your arrival time will read early.

Will it know about traffic?

No, it works from the average speed you give it, so it cannot see live traffic. If you expect heavy traffic, lower the average speed you enter, or add an extra stop's worth of time as a buffer.
