What the drive time calculator does
You have a drive ahead of you and you want a quick, honest answer to one question: how long is this going to take? Give it the distance and the speed you expect to average, and it tells you the driving time. It can also work the other way, finding the speed you would need for a certain time, or the distance you would cover, if that is what you are after.
It is kept deliberately simple, just kilometers or miles and time in hours, so you get the number without fuss when you are planning a trip.
How to use it
- Choose a calculation. Find Time is the usual one for trip planning. Find Speed and Find Distance are there for the other two questions.
- Enter the two values it asks for. Your distance in km or miles, and your speed or time. Time is entered in hours, so half an hour is 0.5.

How the drive time is worked out
For the usual case, finding the time, it is one division. The time is the distance divided by the speed you will average:
Drive time = distance ÷ average speed
So 200 km at an average of 80 km/h is 200 divided by 80, which is 2.5 hours. The other two modes are the same relationship turned around: distance is speed times time, and the speed you would need is the distance divided by the time you have.
An example with real numbers
Say you are driving 300 km and you expect to average 90 km/h.
- Drive time = 300 ÷ 90 = 3.33 hours
- That 0.33 of an hour is 20 minutes, so the drive is about 3 hours 20 minutes
One thing worth turning into a habit: that decimal answer is in hours, so to read the minutes, multiply the part after the point by 60. Here 0.33 times 60 is 20 minutes.
Why a real drive takes longer than this
This calculator gives you the clean driving time at a steady average speed, and that is genuinely useful, but a real journey almost always runs a little longer. The math has no idea about the things that actually slow a drive down: traffic, red lights, roadworks, slowing through towns, and the simple human need to stop for fuel, food, or a stretch. For a short hop none of that matters much. For a long drive, it adds up. A good habit is to take the number this gives you and add a buffer of roughly 10 to 20 percent for a longer trip, more if you know the route is busy. That turns a tidy calculation into a plan you can actually rely on.
Picking a realistic average speed
The answer is only as good as the speed you feed it, and the speed people get wrong is the average one. The number on the speed limit sign is not your average. On a pure motorway run you might average close to 100 km/h, but the moment a trip mixes in towns, junctions, and slower roads, your real door-to-door average drops, often to 60 or 70 km/h even when the limit was higher. A city trip can average far less again. So when you enter a speed, think about the whole journey, not the fastest stretch of it, and the time will come out much closer to reality.

How is drive time calculated?
Distance divided by your average speed. Two hundred kilometers at an average of eighty kilometers per hour is two and a half hours of driving.
Why did my drive take longer than the result?
The calculation assumes a steady average speed and no interruptions. Real drives have traffic, lights, towns, and stops, so the actual time runs longer. Adding 10 to 20 percent to the result for a long trip usually lands close.
The answer is in decimal hours. How do I get the minutes?
Multiply the part after the decimal point by 60. So 3.33 hours is 3 hours and 0.33 times 60, which is about 20 minutes.
What average speed should I enter for a road trip?
Use the average for the whole route, not the top speed. A mixed trip with some highway and some town driving often averages 60 to 70 km/h even where limits are higher, so be honest about the slow parts.
