What the bike frame size calculator does
Buying a bike that is the wrong size is a quiet way to make every ride a little uncomfortable, and it is easy to get wrong online where you cannot throw a leg over the thing first. This tool gives you a sensible starting size to aim for. You tell it the kind of bike, your height, and your inseam, and it suggests a frame size, with a couple of neighbouring sizes in case you are between them.
The measurement that actually drives the result is your inseam, your leg length, because that is what decides how much standover room you have over the frame. Height is useful background, but inseam is the number that matters most for fit.

- Bike Type. Mountain, road, or city and trekking. This matters, and the next-to-last section explains why.

How to measure your inseam properly
This is worth doing carefully, because the whole result hangs on it. Stand with your back to a wall, feet about shoulder width apart and shoes off. Put a book between your legs and pull it up snugly, spine up, as if it were the saddle taking your weight. Mark where the top of the book meets the wall, then measure straight down to the floor. That distance is your cycling inseam. It is usually a little different from the inside-leg figure on a pair of trousers, so measure rather than assume.
How the size is worked out
The tool takes your inseam and multiplies it by a factor that depends on the bike type, which gives a frame size in centimeters:
Frame size = inseam × a factor set by the bike type
For a road bike the factor is the largest, for a mountain bike the smallest, with city and trekking bikes in between. If you chose imperial, your inseam is converted to centimeters first, the size is worked out, and then converted to inches for you. The two nearby sizes it lists are simply half a size either way, since real bikes come in steps and you may sit on the boundary between two.
An example with real numbers
Say your inseam is 78 cm and you are looking at a road bike.
- Frame size = 78 × the road factor, which works out to about a 52 cm frame
- It also suggests 51.5 cm and 52.5 cm as the sizes either side
Now keep the same 78 cm inseam but switch to a mountain bike, and the recommendation drops to roughly 45 cm. Same legs, smaller frame. That is not a glitch, it is the point of the bike-type setting, which the next section explains.
Why the bike type changes the answer
The same rider needs a different frame number depending on the bike, for two reasons. First, the styles are measured and ridden differently. A mountain bike is built for you to stand up off the saddle, hop, and move around, so it is sized smaller to leave plenty of clearance over the top tube. A road bike keeps you seated in a stretched, efficient position, so it runs larger and closer to your leg length. City and trekking bikes sit between the two, upright and comfortable. So when you change the bike type, you are really telling the tool which sizing convention to use, and the recommended number moves to match.
A starting point, not the final word
Treat this as a well-aimed first guess rather than a guarantee. Frame sizing from inseam gets you to the right size or within one of it, which is genuinely useful for narrowing a search, but bodies are not all built to the same proportions. Two people with the same inseam can have different torso and arm lengths, and that affects reach as much as standover does. Brands also measure their frames a little differently from one another. So use this to shortlist, then, wherever you can, sit on the bike, or check the manufacturer's own size chart for that exact model, before you commit.
Questions people ask
Does this use my height or my inseam?
Inseam is what drives the recommended size, because it decides your clearance over the frame. Height is helpful context, but two riders of the same height can have quite different leg lengths, which is why inseam is the key measurement.
What if I am between two sizes?
That is common, which is why the tool offers a size either side. As a rough guide, going smaller tends to feel more nimble and going larger more stretched out and stable, so the better choice depends on the riding you have in mind.
Why does a mountain frame come out smaller than a road frame for me?
Because the two are sized differently. Mountain bikes are kept smaller for clearance when you are up off the saddle, road bikes run larger for a seated, efficient position. The bike-type setting switches between those conventions.
Is the recommended size exact?
It is a strong starting point, not a promise. Reach depends on torso and arm length too, and brands measure frames differently, so confirm with a test ride or the model's own size chart before buying.
