What this does
This flips your text so it reads backwards. It takes every character and reverses the whole order, so the last letter becomes the first and the first becomes the last. Type or paste your text, click, and out comes the mirror-of-the-order version. The word Reverse, for instance, comes back as esreveR.

What backwards means here
Worth being clear about what kind of backwards this is, because there are a few. This tool reverses the order of the characters, so the text runs from right to left, but the letters themselves are still the normal way up and the normal way round. It does not flip each letter into its mirror image, and it does not turn your words upside down. So you get the sequence reversed, not the shapes. If it is flipped or upside-down letters you are after, those are separate effects with their own tools.
Where people use it
Reversed text is good fun and genuinely handy in a few spots. It is great for puzzles and brain teasers, where readers have to work out the message. It makes a playful way to write a hidden note that someone has to flip back to read. Teachers and parents use it for spelling and reading games. And if you are toying with palindromes, words that read the same forwards and backwards, reversing the text is a quick way to check one by eye. A note on emoji
One honest limitation. Plain letters, numbers, and punctuation reverse perfectly. Emoji are a different story, because a single emoji is often stored as more than one piece of text under the hood. When the order is reversed, those pieces can get split apart, and the emoji may come out garbled or broken rather than landing neatly in its new spot. So if your text is sprinkled with emoji, do not be surprised if they do not survive the flip cleanly. For ordinary text, the reversal is spot on.
Questions people ask
Does it make mirror or upside-down letters?
No. It reverses the order of the characters while keeping each letter the normal way up. Flipped and upside-down lettering are different effects handled elsewhere.
Can I use it to check a palindrome?
Yes. Reverse your word or phrase and compare it with the original. If the two read the same, you have a palindrome.
What about text with several lines?
The whole thing is reversed as one piece, so every character is flipped in order. If you only want to flip the order of lines rather than characters, use the reverse text lines tool.
Why did my emoji come out broken?
An emoji is often made of several units of text, and reversing the order can break them apart. Plain text reverses cleanly, but emoji may not.
