What this does

So you are building a layout and you need some filler text to pour into it. This generates that for you. Tell it how many words and how many paragraphs you want, and it produces a block of classic lorem ipsum placeholder text, ready to copy and drop into your design. It saves you typing out nonsense by hand just to see how a page will look once words fill it.

What lorem ipsum actually is

Lorem ipsum is the placeholder text that the design and printing world has leaned on for centuries. It looks like Latin, and it loosely is, with roots in a piece of writing by the Roman thinker Cicero, but it has been jumbled so that it carries no real meaning. It has served as the standard dummy text of the printing trade since around the 1500s, when a printer is said to have scrambled a tray of type to make a specimen. The point was never to be read, only to fill space convincingly.

Why designers use placeholder text

The reason it works so well comes down to focus. When you are judging a layout, real, readable words pull your attention onto the message, and you start reading instead of looking at the design. Lorem ipsum sidesteps that. Because it means nothing, your eye treats it purely as shape and texture, letting you assess spacing, line length, font size, and balance without distraction. It also has the rough rhythm and letter spread of normal writing, so it stands in for real content far more honestly than simply repeating a single word would.

Good to know

A small honest note about what comes out. The text is drawn from the classic, fairly small pool of lorem ipsum words, so over a long block you will see the same words come round again, and each paragraph opens with the familiar word Lorem. That is completely normal for placeholder text and does not matter for its job, since it is there to be looked at rather than read. When you are ready for the real thing, you simply swap the lorem ipsum out for your actual copy.

Questions people ask

Does lorem ipsum mean anything?

Not really. It is based on scrambled Latin, so the odd word has a root in the original, but as a whole it is deliberately meaningless. That is the point, since it is meant to be looked at, not read.

Can I control how much text it makes?

Yes. You set both the total number of words and how many paragraphs to spread them over, so you can match the amount to the space you are filling.

Why do the same words keep appearing?

Placeholder text uses a limited set of words, so over a longer block they naturally repeat. It makes no difference to the job, which is to fill a layout with realistic-looking text.
