What this does

A palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same forwards and backwards, like level or radar. This checks whether your text is one. Type a word, a name, a phrase, or a number, and it tells you straight away with a clear yes or no. The word itself comes from Greek and means, roughly, running back again, which is a lovely way to picture what a palindrome does.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. The verdict updates as you type, or press Check to confirm it.
  3. Use Copy to grab your text, or Reset to clear the box.

The check runs in your browser, so whatever you test stays on your own device.

What counts as a palindrome here

The clever part is that the checker looks past the things that would otherwise get in the way. Before it tests your text, it ignores capital letters, spaces, and punctuation, and weighs up only the letters and numbers. That is what lets whole phrases pass, not just single tidy words. So A man, a plan, a canal: Panama is recognised as a palindrome, even with its capitals, spaces, commas, and colon, because underneath all that the letters run the same both ways. Numbers play by the same rule, so something like 12321 reads as a palindrome too. You can throw a natural phrase at it exactly as you would write it, and it will judge the heart of the thing.

Some famous palindromes

Palindromes are a favourite corner of wordplay, and a few have become classics worth trying in the box. Single words like racecar, kayak, civic, and noon are the simplest kind. Phrases are where it gets clever, like Was it a car or a cat I saw, or Never odd or even, or the famous Panama line above. They are great for teaching reading and spelling, fun for puzzles and party games, and oddly satisfying to discover on your own. Once you start looking for them, you find them in the most unexpected places.

Questions people ask

Does capitalisation matter?

No. The checker ignores capital letters, so a word works whether you type it in capitals or not. Only the letters and numbers themselves are compared.

Can I test a whole phrase with spaces?

Yes, that is one of its strengths. Spaces and punctuation are set aside, so a multi-word phrase is judged on its letters alone and can come out as a palindrome.

Does it work on numbers?

It does. Numbers are treated just like letters, so a figure that reads the same both ways, such as 12321, is recognised as a palindrome.

Do I have to press the button each time?

Not necessarily. The result updates live as you type, so you can watch it change while you experiment, and the button is there to confirm whenever you want.
