What the cycling calorie calculator does

If you are curious roughly how much energy a ride used, this tool gives you an estimate. You choose the type of cycling, enter your weight and how long you rode, and it returns an approximate number of calories burned, along with a rough weight figure that the section below puts firmly in context.

It is a useful ballpark for understanding the effort of different rides, as long as you read the number for what it is: an estimate based on averages, not a precise measurement of your particular body on your particular ride.

How the estimate is worked out: METs

The calculation is based on a measure called the MET, short for metabolic equivalent, which expresses how many times harder an activity is than sitting still. Resting is 1 MET, and each type of cycling is assigned a value drawn from published research: gentle leisure riding sits around 4 METs, stationary cycling around 5, BMX and mountain biking around 8.5, and hard race cycling as high as 16. The calories follow from your MET value, your body weight, and your time:

Calories ≈ MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200, per minute

The practical upshot is intuitive. A heavier rider burns more than a lighter one at the same effort, a longer ride burns more than a short one, and a hard effort burns far more than an easy spin, which is why the activity choice swings the number so much.

An example with real numbers

Say you weigh 70 kilograms and ride for one hour.

  • Leisurely, at about 4 METs, that is roughly 294 calories
  • Hard race cycling, at about 16 METs, would be around 1,176 calories for the same hour

That is a huge spread for the same rider over the same time, and it shows how much intensity drives the figure. It also hints at why these numbers are only ever estimates, since how hard you actually rode is something a dropdown can only approximate.

How rough this is, and the weight figure

Two honest points are worth more than the number itself. First, the calorie estimate rests on average MET values, and real energy use varies a lot from person to person with fitness, terrain, wind, riding efficiency, and body composition. So treat the result as a broad ballpark for comparing rides, not an exact count, and do not build careful arithmetic on top of it.

Second, the weight figure. It comes from a crude rule that roughly 7,700 calories equate to a kilogram of body fat, but bodies simply do not work that tidily. Your weight responds to your overall energy balance over weeks and months, shaped by food, sleep, hydration, hormones, and how your body adapts to training, not by the calories of any single ride. So that figure is best taken as a loose illustration and not as a target to chase. If managing your weight is something you care about, the things that actually help are sustainable, enjoyable activity and steady overall habits, and a doctor or registered dietitian can give advice that fits you personally. The real reasons to ride are how good it makes you feel, the fitness and health it builds, and the simple enjoyment of it, and those hold true whatever the calorie counter says.
