What this tool does
Every YouTube video has a thumbnail, and this tool fetches it for you in one step. Paste a video link and you get that thumbnail in several sizes, from a full HD version down to small, each ready to preview and download. It also works with Vimeo links.
How to use it
Copy the URL of a YouTube video, paste it into the box, and press the button. The thumbnail appears in a range of sizes, each with its own download link. Click the size you need to open or download it. If your browser opens the image instead, right-click and choose Save Image As. A Vimeo video link works the same way.
How it works
YouTube stores every thumbnail at a predictable web address built from the video's ID, the short code in its link. The tool pulls that ID out of the URL you paste and assembles the addresses for each size, which is why it can show them instantly without anything to install. For Vimeo, where the addresses are not public in the same way, it asks Vimeo's own service for the image instead.
The resolutions, and using thumbnails fairly
You get the thumbnail in up to five sizes: HD at 1,280 × 720, standard at 640 × 480, and three smaller versions at 480 × 360, 320 × 180, and 120 × 90. One thing to expect: the HD version only exists if the creator uploaded a high-resolution thumbnail, so for some older or smaller videos the largest sizes may not appear.
A quick word on fair use. A video's thumbnail is the creator's own work, so it is fine to grab one for reference, to study what is working in your niche, or to download your own, but reposting someone else's thumbnail as if it were yours is not. Why is there no HD thumbnail for some videos?
The full-resolution image only exists if the uploader provided one. Older or lower-quality videos may not have it, so only the smaller sizes will show.
Does it work with Vimeo?
Yes. Paste a Vimeo link and the tool retrieves that video's thumbnail through Vimeo's own service, alongside its support for YouTube.
Which size should I download?
Pick the HD version for anything you will display large, and a smaller one if you just need a quick reference or a lightweight image.
Can I use a thumbnail I download?
