What this tool does

On Twitter, now called X, your handle gets just 15 characters, the tightest limit of any major platform. Names that fit comfortably elsewhere often will not squeeze in here. This tool generates short, taggable ideas you can filter and copy, so you can find one that lands inside that limit.

How to use it

Pick a quantity under Number / Quantity and press Generate. To aim the results, use Starts with, Contains, or Ends with, each of which keeps only ideas matching the letter or word you type. Copy pulls the list so you can paste and compare your favourites.

How it works

The tool picks at random from a large, curated list of name ideas. It is there to knock you out of a blank-page rut, and the filters narrow that list to a theme or sound. Grab one you like and tailor it to you.

Names that fit Twitter's tight handle

X keeps your handle and your display name separate, and the gap between them is wider here than on most platforms.

The handle, the @name in your link and your mentions, runs from 4 to 15 characters and accepts only letters, numbers, and underscores. Note what is missing: no periods, unlike Instagram or TikTok, so a handle that uses a dot elsewhere will need a rethink here. Fifteen characters disappear fast, which is why short, punchy names rule on X.

The display name is the roomy one, up to 50 characters, with space for capitals, emoji, and a little wit, since plenty of people change it to a running joke or a current status. A good split is a clean, permanent handle paired with a display name you can play with. And if you are claiming the same identity across apps, design for the 15-character handle first, then the longer limits on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube will all accommodate it.

Questions people ask

How many characters can a Twitter handle have?

From 4 to 15, using letters, numbers, and underscores only. Periods are not allowed. The display name is separate and stretches to 50 characters.

Is it Twitter or X now?

The platform was renamed X, though many people still say Twitter. The handle and display-name rules are unchanged by the rebrand.

What is the difference between the handle and the display name?

The handle is your unique @name used in links and tags. The display name is the larger label on your profile, which can repeat across accounts and hold spaces and emoji.

Are the names made by AI?

No. They are drawn at random from a curated list, so use them as inspiration to adapt rather than finished handles. The filters help you steer toward something that fits.
